jewelling a bolt

Brownells sells a bolt jeweling jig.
It holds the bolt and allowes you to turn it to over lap
The patterns. It's really not hard. One way is to use Valve grinding compound and a pencil 's eraser in your drill press. apply the compound to the bolt body and use the pencil's eraser as a tool Like a dril bit to touch the bolt body . You can also use a very small steel brush that is round. Both work fine in the drill press.

Try a wooden dowel rod chucked up in a drill press, apply rubbing compound to the end of the dowel rod and lower the rod down onto the bolt, hold, raise, move bolt and repete. You will have no trouble as long as you have a drill press.

nice job on the 10/22
If he is doing a round bolt though i believe he is going to need that jig from brownell . He can do it without one but it sure is going to take a lot of fooling around to line the jeweling up.
I think he has grasped the concept though.
That's what's special about this board.
good guys who pitch in like you.
Sometime a picture is worth a thousand words'

Here's a fantastic tutorial that includes instructions to build your own jig.

I've found that in order for the jeweling to be sharp and bright, you must have the bolt surface extremely well polished before starting.
