Jewell Trigger Sear Length.....

STS

Silver $$ Contributor
I have a Jewell HVR in a 700 with a stock Remington cocking piece and firing pin. With the Jewell in there it has a measured .340 firing pin fall and about .085 or .090 cock on close. Has anyone ever seen a Jewell with a sear that hands off the cocking piece that far back. I wonder if the sear is the wrong dimensions. I've had quite a few Jewells over the years but never one like this. Do they have more than one length of sear?

I can't answer your question, but I decided to measure mine just to give you another datum. My Jewel HVR on a 700 has about 0.060 cock on close with 0.285 pin drop.

Here is that trigger about 300 rounds ago (about 3000 total on two barrels up to that point) when it got squirrely at a match (didn't fail, just really clunky and stiff). Probably too many cleanings at the range without a bore guide. Sprayed it down with brake cleaner, reassembled and no problems in 3 or 4 matches since.

Not germane to the thread, but maybe you see something that helps.

I have a Model 7 that has almost that much cock on close. I have about .080" and about .330" pin fall.

I spoke to Jewell about this and they said they only had one length top sear. Jewell calls this part a cocking bar. They sold me a part so I could modify it but they recommended I didn't.

Why not take a bit off your cocking piece and reduce the COC. About 0.240" is the minimum amount of pin fall acceptable.

If I do that then that trigger and cocking piece would have to stay together as a mated pair. If I fix the issue with the trigger it can be used with any action/bolt with the standard measurements. Seems to me that would be the appropriate solution. I'm not sure why Jewell has those triggers that much different from the normal Remington sears.

Alex, that's what I thought as well. As I said, I've had quite a few Jewells and never found one with this much pin fall or coc. I put a Walker trigger in the rifle and it had about .260 of pin fall so it seems to be all in the Jewell.

Very true, but a new cocking piece is cheaper than a trigger if you do go that route.
