Jewell Trigger questions- Update-Fixed!!

I just bought a Jewell HVRT trigger for Rem 700. It has the bolt release and safety and was marked as "1 lb" with the "A" spring installed.

This is my second Jewell and the first was absolutely perfect and dropped right in.

I put this one in a newer Rem700 replacing the XMark trigger. The bolt release in the action and the bolt release lever on the trigger work smoothly independently but when installed, seem to require a lot of effort. The trigger pins also seemed rather stiff when installing the Jewell, more so than when coming out of the XMark.

Also, I have a one pound trigger but also a very noticeable and slight take up feeling like a "click" prior to firing. I've followed the Jewell instructions, dry fired and adjusted for over an hour, but cannot seem to get the creep out.

Can anyone offer advice to correct the creep? Did I get a bad trigger? Or, is there something I'm missing.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

Not sure if this is your issue but you might want to check and make sure your stock has a relief cut for the trigger. Mine had to be milled out in the trigger recess area in back corner for the trigger to fit properly. I would bet it is hitting or dragging on the stock and causing your issues.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

I'll check. I don't have access to the rifle at this moment. The action is in an H&S Precision stock and didn't seem to be binding when I put it in. I can pull the bottom metal and see if anything is touching the trigger assy.

Thanks.

My stock had to have the same modification to it.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

My H-S Precision stocks have all had to have some extra clearance in order for the bolt release and the safety on my Jewell triggers to operate correctly.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

I had to modify my stocks also for the Jewell Varmint trigger, with the bolt release. The lever assembly has more material on it than the factory trigger, and it will make hard contact with the stock. My Dremel tool did quick work of that.

As for the creep, that may be a whole different issue. They are so simple to dis-assemble, I do not hesitate to take them apart for a thorough and complete inspection (under magnification), cleaning, light polishing if any parts require, reassemble and adjust following the directions.

I've yet to have one with a problem that I could not fix myself.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

if the trigger is installed correctly:

Screw #1 front most.
Screw #2 in the middle(under the tabs)
Screw # # in the trigger.
Make sure no ammunition is in gun.
1. Close bolt turn screw #1 in until it fires. Lift bolt handle until bolt is cocked again. Turn Screw back 3/4 turn.
2. Back out screw #2 until it is touching the tabs. Close bolt and screw in screw #2 until it fires screw inn screw #2 1/4 turn more.
3. Adjust Screw #3 in or out to adjust trigger pull weight.
There are 3 different springs, A, B, and C. one adjust 0-2oz, one adjust 2-8oz. and one 8-48oz.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

Trigger hanging pin locations vary, with regard to height, on 700 actions. You may have one that has holes far enough off to cause problems. I have one of them and oddly enough, two other brand custom triggers would not work but the Jewell did.

Another great example of why I frequent this place.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

I had creep or unwanted movement with mine using the instructions Jewel provides and I have read this many times being the case.. I suggest having a Smith do it if your not confident and testing for slam fire and safety function afterwards..They do work good when you figure it out, should not need to disassemble but only to change springs if you desire to lighten the weight of pull...I would check for stock clearance with your other problems..

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

Ray: There are times when dis-assembly is required, after other attempts like flushing the trigger with lighter fluid does not work.

One of my Jewell benchrest triggers developed creep, tried adjusting the 3 screws as per instructions, no results. Then removed the trigger and flushed with lighter fluid, no results.

Dis-assembled the trigger and found a 1/2 kernal of N133 powder (the only powder ever used in this rifle), floating around. Removed it, thoroughly cleaned all interior parts, re-assembled, adjusted the 3 screws, and the trigger has been a perfect 4 oz. since.

The ease and simplicity of taking them apart is just one of the reasons I favor the Jewells.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

I know what your saying and agree.. If the OP feels okay with that I strongly recommend finding out how easy your own Jewel is to service..He can disassemble one side without worry of parts flying and the instructions has a picture for easy reassembly..

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

I had major creep in mine after disassembly and cleaning. I used the Jewell instructions to adjust it, but it was really creepy. I found that I was really putting a LOT of pressure on the trigger when adjusting the middle screw. That caused the creep. When you adjust the middle screw, just LIGHTLY touch the trigger and screw in the screw until the gun "fires" - also, you don't need to back off the first screw adjustment 3/4 turn like Jewell recommends. I've got mine a 3/8 turn and it's a nice crisp 3 ounces. HTH

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

Go back and read my instructions. Correction was made.

Screw number 1 adjusted until fires. Then back screw off 3/4 turn. Follow remaining instructions.

This was taken straight from the Jewell instructions.

Sometimes the bolt release lever on the jewell trigger makes contact with the factory Rem trigger gaurd. You can use a small file or dremel tool to remove some material from the inside of the trigger gaurd. Aftermarket trigger gaurds are usually machined out a little in this area for this reason.
I hope this helps.

Pull the action and try it without the stock.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

Thanks for all the responses. I'll check clearances and pull the action from the stock tomorrow when I have time.

Will update with what I find.

Thanks.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

I would suggest doing it in stages, meaning, pull the trigger gaurd while leaving the front action screw in and see if it helps. Then pull the rear action screw and take the stock off to see if it helps. Just some thoughts. Good luck with it.

Re: Jewell Trigger questions

Okay, I fixed both issues. There were actually three issues with the bolt release that fixed the trigger creep.

1. I looked at the aluminum Remington trigger guard and saw that the Jewell bolt release tab was touching the edge of the trigger guard. I removed the trigger guard and made a small relief cut slightly wider than the tab/lever width and made it deep enough for clearance.

2. On the inside of the H&S stock, the carbon fiber stock material around the trigger area was slightly in contact with the side of the pin which held the lower portion of the bolt release lever. About two seconds with the Dremel cleared that. It looked like this was putting side pressure on the trigger as the stock actually had a slight impression where contact was before opening it up with the Dremel.

3. Finally, the Remington bolt release is a stamped metal part. The underside of mine was horribly rough and actually "looked grooved" so to speak. I filed off the high spots and polished it smooth.

I actually removed and re-assembled the trigger from the action about 5 or six times to find and correct these problems.

When I was finally done with the bolt release issue, I followed the Jewell adjustment instructions and re-set the trigger to one pound. It seems that all the side pressure and contact on the trigger may have put stress on the trigger assembly, causing the creep.

Sorry I don't have a good camera to post pics as this might have been instructional for others.

Works great now. Thanks for all the responses.
