jewell trigger installation question Win 70

I was planning on installing my new jewell trigger tomorrow and I was hoping that someone had a few tips they would be willing to share.

The instructions only tell you what to do if the trigger doesn't work, not how to install it. This is my first trigger job and I'm sure it's simple enough for Jewell not to have a set of complete install instructions.

The rifle is ann FN-SPR. Win 70 Pre 64.
I have a dremmel and complete set of grinding, polishing and sanding stuff.

Thank you in advance.

Rich

I've done a bunch of these.

The back of the trigger guard will have to be relieved because the trigger will hit the guard ring. You can take a bit off of the bottom of the trigger if you rather.

Depending on the fit of the stock, you will need to clear out the width of the slot in the stock where the trigger fits into it.

There are two rivets holding the Jewell box together that will bind when put into the stock... these hit the side of the stock slot - especially if it's one of the H-S Precision stocks with the aluminum frames.

Not hard.

Now comes the bitch. The front of the trigger guard MUST be hogged out to clear the front bottom of the Jewell box.

I use a Dremel with a cutter, and just chip away at it, until it clears, and then take a little extra.

It sounds like a pain, but it's really maybe 45 minutes to an hour.

It is worth it.

The last "maybe" is one that Jewell warns you about in the instructions - that the sear of the Jewell may not be in time with the pin release sear in the receiver. If this happens, the safety might have a problem setting, and that fix is too complicated to do in writing.

But I have done over a dozen Jewell's in M-70 rifles, and have not run into this problem.

THANK YOU CATSHOOTER !!!!!!

I've been googling my butt off trying to find an article on installing a jewell trigger. Not one article could be found in twenty pages!

I think I will take pictures and do a write up on the installation, I found lots of guys with questions for trigger installs using the search button.

Quite a few people sent their triggers back or decided to ha a smith do the work because the information just isn't available.

Thanks again,

Rich

CatShooter's description of this install was just like my experience with my Model 70. Wasn't that tough with a Dremel and a couple of good carbide bits and a small round file. I have mine in a H-S Precision and had no problems there either. The toughest part was modifying the Williams trigger guard but I took my time and looks great. I did have to slightly enlarge the hole in the reciever to allow the firing pin stop of the trigger to protrude up through the reciever without bearing against same. Small square profile file worked great for this. And be sure you seat the two pins all the way that hold the trigger to the reciever. I didn't get the large headed pin driven in all the way the first round and it took me a while to figure out why the action wouldn't bed on the tang end.

Wyo:)

HOLY CR@P!!

I'm finished!!!!! It took just over an hour and that's because i had to refer back to some pictures i took of the spring attachment for the bolt release.

I had to remove about 1/8" of epoxy from both sides of my stock, cut a small relief in my trigger guard and clean everything up.

It was stupid simple, that's the problem....you just can't comprehend how easy it actually is.

Thanks again Catshooter!

PS, I ordered the trigger with an 8 oz pull, my safety works great and the trigger was worth every penny.

Darn, makes me wish I had tried putting mine in instead of sending it back now. Oh well, maybe I'll be brave enough to try the next one. Bill

Bill, I read the post when you got your jewell trigger and I was feeling the same way at first, I read that you should never be afraid to work on your own guns.
