Jewell Trigger for Winchester 70

I purchased a used Jewell for my Winchester model 70 recently. After installing it, I find the striker won't stay back when closing the bolt. I can feel it go over the top of the sear when closing. I didn't get instructions with it as it was used and I guess I don't know which screws do what. I pulled out the instructions for my Jewell Remington and tried turning a couple but could not get any sear engagement. Are the adjustments the same for both triggers? Does anyone have an idea why the bolt won't stay cocked? Does anyone have instructions they can send me or help me find some on the net someplace? Thanks.

This is very common with Jewells and Winchesters and clones (FN, Dakota,??). The sear aperture in the receiver needs to be opened up towards the front of the action to allow clearance for the Jewell sear to fully rise to the top. .025" ought to do it, .050" wont hurt anything. You might have to open up the inletting in the trigger well of the stock, and the bottom metal as well.

Thanks, Kendog

I used a small file and took a little metal off the front of the sear orifice from the bottom. Works great, even the safety. I had instructions for a Remington Jewell and the screws looked the same, and they were. I checked the sear engagement and overtravel and dialed a little more pressure and it feels great. Can't wait to go to the range and try it out in the real world. Thanks again.
