Jag diameter

I was wanting to make a few brass jags, could someone measure a 30 cal jag and tell me the dimensions, I'm guessing the bigger jags are still 8-32 tpi for most rods
Thanks Dustin

A question: Wouldn't it be better to turn them out of stainless or aluminum so they don't react to copper solvents? I mean, if you're going through all that work anyway.
Really nice work, tho.:)

It depends on the thickness of the patch you use. I once discussed with a rep from Parker Hale why their jags were made the way they were. The response was that rifle patches in the UK were made of a certain material of a specific size and that the jags were made for those patches. I ended up having to use a .270 jag for .30 cal with my DCM supplied 2"x2" felt patches.

There is so much to jag fit.

The jag for my 50DTC was included with the rifle. Purpose built by the maker. With the patches I use, there was no way that was going down the bore. I turned down the jag and trimmed the patches.

All my rifles are in the same boat. .338 uses a .300 jag. For the .284 I use a .264 jag that is really smaller than that.

My go to jags for 6 mm rifles vary by .025
.180 & .205
Seems like a lot but they both work. Except with the Butch’s triple twill 6mm BR patches. They are too thick and useless unless you cut them down

I have found that a Midway brass jag designed for a 6mm rifle works well in my .250 Savage and .25-06 with 1-1/4" cloth patches. I have also found that some makers of patches use thicker material than others. So far this has only caused a little more effort to get through .

Make them out of delrin or nylon.
I use my 22+ cal rod. I trimmed down the edge at the base. Better on the crown.

I'm tempted to get a lathe and attempt to make them.

Love Parker-Hale jags. The patch never slips, great for short-stroking.

I size my jags to be compatible with the patches I use to obtain the optimum fit. I've found that most jags are oversized especially for cotton flannel patches.

It is not difficult to resize the jag but requires some time and patience. Mount a drill in vice making sure it is level. Chuck the jag in the drill and polish with 220 or finer grit paper. Go slow and mike frequency reducing diameter very slowly then test for fit. Make sure you clean off the grit on the jag before running it down the bore.

I don't use stainless steel or nickel-plated jags, so I don't think or know if this works well with those type of jags. But it works really well with brass and aluminum (Dewey) jags.
