jack rabbits

Northern Nevada is full of jacks and a hunting license is not required, see http://www.ndow.org/Hunt/
We had lots of jacks here in AZ in the 80's, but then it stopped raining. This year we have been getting more rain so maybe the population will come back. AZ requires a hunting license.

I've been hunting these bunnies all my life with everything from sling shots to high powered rifles. Here's a scanned pic from back in the days before any of us had phones in our pockets. This is eastern Oregon, where the jacks run free, and the coyotes run after them.. By the way after simmering for a couple hours in a pan of mushroom soup, they're pretty tasty. jd

I had an old Mexican Woman driving me crazy for some jack rabbits, she said that they were delicious. Well, we were raised on Cotton Tail rabbits and rabbit gravy.

So, I shot 5 in the head and cleaned them for her. She invited me over for breakfast the next morning with her husband. She had cooked them in a pressure cooker for 7 minutes with a half an onion and a clove of garlic. I ate rabbit till I could eat no more! I checked the liver for spots when I was cleaning them.

The ones that eat up the hay crops would be very good.

After 7 minutes in the pressure cooker, the meat was falling off the bones.

The family had a major get together and ate Rabbit, Taco's, burritos, and fried! You skin and eat rabbit in the Winter time, not Spring and Summer.

Years ago I had a friend named Gertie, she was born in AZ in 1880 and lived there her whole life. 99 years.
We were out with a rock hound group and a couple jackrabbits were shot and became stew. Gertie refused to eat it, she said she had survived droughts and the depression and never eaten a jack. They ate tumbleweed but not jackrabbits.

Might want to check out the Catlow Valley in Eastern Oregon. Lots of jack rabbits along with cotton tails around the alfalfa fields. It is a little late in the season, but this general area has sage rats too. To the east are the Steens Mtns., and if you have never been there it is quite a sight to see. Always a chance to see wildlife, including some of Oregon's largest mule deer, desert elk and herds of antelope. The area is about as remote as you can find, so take adequate supplies.

Otter, I have spent many incredible weeks and weekends , and tankfulls of gas in the Catlow Steens area. It is indeed hard to beat the jack rabbit hunting to be found there. Some of the mule deer in that country are big enough to saddle and ride. Most Oregonians have no idea that our state even has country like that. jd

Ae there any good places to hunt jack rabbits out west

Well....."yes", about anywhere!

Any place you find sagebrush and/or alfalfa, you'll find plenty of jacks. Here's a shot of the results of about an hour with our 10-22's when the bench rat shooting had tapered off a bit. Grab your 10-22, walk the sage and have fun wackin' the jacks as they haul a$$ through the eastern Oregon sagebrush.

It's no trouble finding them, the chore is hitting them! :)
