I’ve missed a lot!

I got out of the reloading and BR game for a while. I finally got things situated and think I’ll start acquiring everything again…. I guess I won’t be needing any more custom barrels (fully custom anyway) thanks to the 6.8 westerns release. Any one shooting one in f-class?

I haven't heard of any.
Though i'm not heavy into F-Class either.
Sounds like something that may do well at one of @jghoghunter long range steel matches.
If your near PA.

Good luck & let us know how it does!

This is a list of the bullets currently available and used in the 6.8 Western:

There are a couple of corporate ballistic table there as well.

I, like so few others, am not a supporter of anything .270 and this includes the 6.8 Western of course. I did buy a bunch of brass when it was available but chose to neck it down to 6.5mm like the .270 WSM brass I did years ago. Yes, the 6.5mm field is chock full of old and new cartridges but I couldn't resist the temptation! ;) Mine is simply necked down with no other changes.

Enjoy your desire!

:)

That's only factory ammo.
Hopefully 270WinDude reloads!
If so there are many more bullet choices!

I 'spose I should confess to having built a .270 WSM chassis rifle for hunting with a suppressor. 21" barrel and a 1:9" twist because I hunt between 4,000 - 6,000 feet using the Berger .277, 170 gr. Elite Hunter. The lowlands of GA really required the 1:8.5" twist to maximize the BC but I didn't build that one...;) At the time I used a Defiance XM action and had the reamer ground for an OAL of 3.100" for DBM feeding. Killed a muley way out there but it was one I neglected to write down. I think it was the campfire libations which made that occur...

I also tried the Hammer Hunter 148 gr. which shot OK, too.

:)

What really kills me is that 270 wsm seems alive and well but 7wsm is dead as it can be. My friend in Tenn has his and his son has one, he hasn't seen any brass in years.

I would think the “270” is as much an identifying trademark to Winchester as the “30/30”.
It is uniquely “Winchester”.

But there seems to be a modern day distain for it.

I suspect that I will never see anyone shoot a 6.8 Cowboy in F-Class. It is unlikely that brass will ever come to NZ or Aussie (?). It is less likely that Lapua or Norma will make any in the short term, given that Lapua have cut down their catalogue for a while. Less likely still is that any decent 270 bullets will find their way south - even if someone threw the capital into manufacturing them, when 224/6mm/30cal and 7mm are still in short supply. Can anybody suggest why a 6.8 is ballistically better than a 7mm? Maybe the reason that the 270 WSM never found favour with the F-Class shooters and the 7mm SAUM did.

NZ don't fell all left out there are no good 270 bullets here either, at least none ive ever heard of yet someone keeps convincing hunters that 270 will kill better than anything on the planet. We have 6.5 and 7 mm bullets yet someone in the military thinks it is best to reinvent the wheel and make 6.8 bullets. i have no idea what it takes to defeat body armor, but I can't help but be skeptical of a whiz bang cartridge that operates at 30% more pressure than anything anybody in the world uses.

I used to reload a bunch. I had a van with a reloading bench and all my powders bullets brass and equipment. I will say trying to find decent brass will be hard for the 6.8 western but I can make do. I did with a custom build 270win and wsm. I like to be slightly on the outskirts of what general convention is usually. Which is why I tried squeezing as much precision as I could out of my old hunting rifles. I don’t think I’ve shot factory ammo since my first rifle. I was just curious if anyone here was experimenting with loads and whatnot but I guess some have lumped it in with the creedmoore for some reason.

This 6.8 western is a 270 WSM that has had it shoulder pushed back so you can load a longer bullet without it going into the case so far you lose powder space. Thats the same thing that Dennis De Mille did to make the 6.5 Creedmoor. And he did an excellent job. The reason that there is so much hate of the Creedmoor is it was hyped so much and so over the top that people believe just owning one will make you win the Camp Perry 1000yd matches. Like PO Ackerly did with every case he could find. the 6.8western was Dennis De Milled or maybe it was Creedmoored.
