Itching for a new Rifle

I know I am dumb but how do you turn a 30-06 into a 6.5-06 forgive me but I have never heard of that caliber.

The 06 I have is a Remington 7600 pump BDL that is no longer manufactured. Can I keep it as is or do I have to modify it?

That would destroy the value of the fire arm.

Easy. Use 25/06,neck up) or 270 cases, neck down) and borrow my 6.5/06 reamer.

OK dogbuster and boogershooter for discussions sake let's say I was able to find a M-94 Mauser in 6.5x55 SE what then?

This might be possible since I have a dealer close that handles old WWII rifles,I bought my Yugo SKS from them and rebuilt it, not much work since it was in good shape)

Let's say I can find one with the action in good condition. I would want to restock it and have the barrel worked on for accuracy or should I replace the barrel?

What stock, sport, original or bench rest?) Do I have the barrel cut and to what length? Re-crowned definitely! Leave the barrel with the sights on or chop? This would be my winter of 08 project gun.

What are your views on this.

Thanks
Jim

Nothing, try another action. The Swede actions are not strong enough to use a high pressure load, like 308/25-06/270/etc).

I know they are only rated for 30,000 CUP instead of 50,000 cup for the american made 6.5's. I am trying to make a one hole shooter for 10 shots at 300 meters, not a Moose gun, I have moose guns.

Thanks
Jim

i agree with jo191145, look at a stevens or savage and change the barrel out, different trigger and stock. a stevens 200 new sells for around $300 bucks. get a 243 and change it to anything with the same size case head. way cheaper than a swedish mauser.you could go 260rem, 6.5x55, 6.5-284, etc. just order a barrel, install, set headspace and lock the barrel nut and shoot. you could go 260 rem and later change to 22-250 or 308. good way to get a nice shooting rifle and not go broke. cliffe

Cliffe - your are probable right but they are going for a lot more money around here. I saw a real nice 243 Remington SPS used for $399 but I still would have swapped out the barrel and trigger that would have brought the cost to $800 or $900. I can buy an old Mauser for about $150 and rebuild it for a lot less than a name brand. I looked at the Tikka T3 $499 at Cabela's,liked it), the Remington SPS $599,they sure have changed the trigger in the last few years, real nice)), the Savage model 10 $549,blind mag no thank you). With each of these I still would have to buy a new barrel to get what I want, more money.) The 260 and 6.5 are not popular in my neck of the woods

I own a Savage in 243,$550) with the Accutriger and can hit the X at 100 yards not the X ring but the X in the center of the target almost every time. I am reluctant to change it till the barrel is worn out, then I would re-barrel it in 6.5 but not until then.

Since I just bought the Marlin 336CS my wife has banned me from any gun store for the next six months. You may laugh at that, but I have been married 4 times and this one has lasted 22 years she is a great wife and I will do my best to keep her that way,LOL). I know a good thing when I see it.

There would not be a problem,I hope) if I want to re-build a piece of junk, cheap) into a primo shooting stick if the cost was not excessive, that's how I got my SKS right after buying a Kimber 1911.)

With those constraints what would you do in my shoes?

Jim

jim a model 200 stevens retail price on the savage website is $349. get one in 243, you already have brass and dies. mine averaged .8 groups. later on change out the trigger, then the stock and finally the barrel. why buy an old military action for 200?, then buy dies etc., when for 150 more you can get a new stevens. if something is wrong with the stevens, they at least have warranty and brand new parts. with an old military action if something is wrong, just pay for more parts to fix it. check out fred moreo website,as well as some of the guns of the week that were built on the savage/stevens on this site. any way you go is fine with me, shooting any type of gun is still fun. let us know what you come up with. cliffe and remember forgiveness is easier to get than permission!!!

Cliffe you are right about new verses old. Here is what will probably happen. In three to six months Marlin will be coming out with their XL7 at about #359.00

I will then purchase it in 25-06 not the 6.5x47 that I was looking for but close.

The cartridge is capable of propelling a 117 grain,7.6 g) bullet at up to 3200 feet per second,980 m/s) and energy levels up to ~2,500 ft·lbf. Bullets lighter than 75 grains are available in .257" caliber, but were designed for the smaller .25-20 Winchester and .25-35 Winchester cartridges and are too lightly constructed for the high velocities of the .25-06.

The cartridge has mild recoil, somewhat below the .270 Winchester but more than the .243 Winchester and .257 Roberts.[5] Shooters who are recoil sensitive will find the recoil from the 25-06 bearable, but not pleasant enough to shoot all day long. This cartridge is nearly as powerful as the .257 Weatherby Magnum, usually running 100-150 ft/s. slower with a given bullet weight.

SAAMI pressure limit for the .25-06 is 63,000 PSI.

My gun store ban should be over by then and the price will not send the little woman into a frenzy. It's a plan I hope a good one.

Thanks again
Jim

Hey Jim,hows it going?I'm currently trying to get my better half interested in the shooting sports. Might be worth a try as long as she doesn't ask for a stock that actually fits her!

Hi Booger

I hope you have more luck at that then I do. Can't get her to go shooting no matter what I do or promise. I even have rifles and pistols she could shoot 22lr & 22mag she still won't go. If you get yours to go let me know how you did it,LOL)

Good luck

Jim
