It sucks to finish last!

I know what your talking about Frankie. I drove all the way 2 weekends ago to shoot a 1,2,300 meter match at Orangeburg, SC from Maine. I took two rifles with me my trusty old Farley Black Widow that I shoot at 100 only and a brand new rifle that Sid Goodling built before he passed away last year. It's a Bat 3L with a Roy Hunter stock chambered in 30 BRX. Well came in 2nd via MR Creedmore at 100 meters and when I started to use the BRX at 200 meters the scope started to fail me big time. It would fade in and out. The first match I lost 14 points, the last 4 matches only dropped 1 point but it was all over for me after the 1st match. I kept hitting the objective bell and it would clear up for a while and then a complete white out of the scope. The 300 meter match the next day was even worse so much that I couldn't even see the target anymore and I didn't even shoot match 5. I asked Bill Shaver who was sitting next to me to look thru the scope after the last match. He looked thru it and said how can you see anything with this? I said that's the problem I can't. I didn't go down to shoot it was an after thought. I had to stop by Bob Green's house in PA to drop off a rifle and 10 barrel blanks, then pick up a rifle and 4 new chambered barrels from him, then I had to drive to Maryland to meet John Bosley over at Herbie and Kim Llewellyn's house to pick up 2 rifles from him and one from Herbie and all the rest of Herb's stuff that he sold me while I was there which was a ton of stuff then to GA to pickup a compete bullet making set-up. My motorhome for so full of stuff I couldn't even move in there. So I drove a total of 2700+ miles only to have a cheap 2200 buck scope fail me. I got used like a rented Government mule.

WOW! I don't feel so bad now but the way it sounds you picked up some really good stuff!!

I couldn't hit the "like" button at all on this one, that sucks, I might have stopped by the truck and used a file on that stock!!
 
I have gone from getting medals and certificates one weekend to not being able to hit myself in the face if I looked down the barrel the next, it happens its what makes us go back. When the wheels come off they seem to come off hard but if you learned something new that weekend it was worth it

That sir is my hope! Learn something.........anything during those times!
 
There are weaker and stronger fields on any given day. When a bunch of HMs show up, things get pretty competitive. At Midrange, I'm happy to be in the middle of the mix. At Long Range, I'm happy to only drop twice as many points as the top shooters that day.
 
Having had a very high level of personnel success in many sports and activities , I walked into F class , like a Lamb to the slaughter . Little did I even realize I was shooting on a range that had over a dozen or more current and past National Champions and World Record holders , along with many members of past and current U.S. Rifle Team members . It took very little time to figure out I was in the really deep end of the pool , without so much as a "floaty". Understanding all these factors ; I revised my expectations , and went to work on improving what I could , to make Me a better shooter . Now ; placing in the top five , or even Top Ten at a "Club Match" is reason for celebration . Like Ben Hogan said . "The more I practice , the luckier I get". It's a process of self improvement , in all areas of this crazy sport .

Love Ben Hogan by the way!! Same here, with last years nationals winner, a few record holders at different time and top notch shooters at every match! I too am very competitive but it takes practice! Did somebody say practice!!

The first time I even saw a 1000 yd range, I shot a High Master score and won the match. This is EASY! Or so I thought. Haven’t been close to a HM score or winning since and I haven’t been to Long Range Alley yet, where humiliation rules, I hear.
 
I'm in K22's 'camp'.
Focus on beating your personal best/developing skills. That's all we've got anyway. Focus on execution. Scores and match standings are the results.

I know he does!! But if my fire gets any bigger for this game I'll be divorced or burn down! ;-) :rolleyes::oops::eek:
 
20200530_140623.jpg 20200530_140822.jpg Now let me say these won't win any matches I'm seeing some improvement, the first target is the 30BR from left to right is 34.2, 34.4, 34.6 and 34.8 grains of H4198 (5 shot groups) and while I've been using 34.8 I'm next going to work on how much jam and experiment with that. On the second target is my 6PPC and using N133, I've been using LT32 and will be experimenting with that also. The difference I see in the 29.2 grains with the vertical was the amount of jam, then moved to 29.4 grains (3 shot groups). So I'll just keep working, the reason for only 2 different grains in the 6 was so many shooters at the range and a little wind I couldn't load so I'll be back. (wait, I've heard that before) :rolleyes::eek::D
