ISO 27 Nosler loads.

Back when Bullets.com went out of business I bought them out of 170gr Elite Hunters. I built an 8 twist 270wby that just would not shoot them. So I just ordered a 8 twist Pacnor 27 Nosler.

Does anyone know of any sources of data? I do run a 26 Nosler and 28 Nosler so I kinda know a proximity.

20190807_171806.jpg I have H1000, N570, RL33, Retumbo, 8133 to start but H50BMG, US869, Ramshot magnum, RL25, RL26 and maybe 7828 for back up just in case.
Thanks for any info.

Use max loads for a 270 Weatherby to start and work up from there. I've tried RL33, Retumbo, US869, IMR 7828ssc and H1000 in two large capacity 270s (270/300 RUM and 270/338 RUM improved) and Retumbo worked pretty well with most bullet weights and US869 was good with the heaviest bullets.

Did you go with a SAAMI spec 270 Nosler, or the 28/26 Nosler case simply necked down to 27?

Saami 27 Nosler, not 27-26 Nosler. Rcbs dies (the only source for SAAMI 27 Nosler) worked pretty good for sizing 26 Nosler brass and did so in one step. I believe I will turn the last 1/3rd of the neck because the .050" or so of the shoulder is pushed into the neck.
I still think it was a better option than trying to size 30 Nosler down to 27 cal. But the body might be about the same length.

Did you shoot the 170gr EH??

I tried them in the 270/338 RUM but they weren't out when I still had the 270 RUM; I did use the 165gr Matrix in the 270 RUM. The standard RUM and the 338 RUM Improved end up having very similar case capacities right around 114gr H20, so close the data ended up being within 2gr for both guns. That capacity is close to 20gr more than the SAAMI spec 27 Nosler, so that's something to keep in mind.

I got the best velocities (3240fps from a 25" barrel) with RL33 and the 170 but it burned incredibly dirty and had pretty poor case fill. US869 gave much better case fill and the velocity was still very good (3180fps). Both of these loads could have been pushed harder but 3200fps was the target velocity so I just stopped there. Retumbo was just too fast for the 170gr class of bullets and I hit pressures with a very low case fill.

Powders like Retumbo and RL33 should be just about ideal with the slightly smaller case capacity of the 27 Nosler. I bet you'll get good case fill and performance with anything in that burn rate with the 170s. The relatively new Ramshot LRT might work well too, but I've never used it.

I still have my two 27/338 RUM improved barrels, an 8" twist Boughton and a 7" twist K&P, but I put that project aside for a while. I chased poor accuracy since day one and was told by most it was just because of the chambering. After a lot of wasted time and frustration it was discovered that it was just bad smith work. The smith didn't (and still won't) admit to any error so I just pulled the barrels and moved on. Now I kind of want to get those back up and running!

Those bum barrels/smithing really drive me crazy! I'm fighting one right now in 6.5wsm. Sometimes it seems like I've been burned more times than not.
Surprisingly the most over bore cartridge I've ever owned (26N) is surprisingly easy to find a load for. Rl33 or H50BMG will work with 14p Hybrids.
I actually blamed the light jacket construction of the 170 EH for the lack of accuracy potential in the 270wby (too much jump and too much velocity slamming into the lands ?) that barrel absolutely loves 150 ABLR with 7828 at 3350fps. 20190725_163524.jpg
I've had my eyes on Ramshot LRT. I might check it out after running some H1000 and N570. My N570 is kind of set aside for 300RUM and 230 OTM but I'm sure I have 3 barrels worth, I'm stingy with it because I waited 4 years to actually find it again.

I've been burned enough times by well known smiths that I now have a VERY short list of folks that I'll use.

The 170 Bergers seem to be a bit hit or miss in most guns; they either shoot very well or not at all. My standard test bullet in any of the magnum 270s has been the 140 or 150gr Ballistic Tip. They've proven to hold up very well to max velocities and they always shoot well enough to determine whether it's the gun's fault that I'm getting 2" groups or if it's just a bad load.

LOL. The 7mmRM barrel this 27N is replacing would NOT shoot anything but 150 NBT and ONLY 150 NBT.
However it shot those little things like a house on fire...actually ended up 1500 round barrel count with those bullets.

My rifle is at the gunsmith getting a 1-8.5 Brux in 27 Nosler so I have been pestering Nosler for data and 165 ABLR bullets. They are telling me the 165's are coming off the presses and should be available in 2 weeks. However, there's no telling when the bullets or ammunition will hit the shelves! They predicted last week for the 150 ABLR data but today Nosler has loads for the 150 ABLR posted. It's really eye opening for me in that the fastest powder listed is 8133! Their fastest accurate load was with MAGPRO @3332 fps so I'm looking at getting 8# but who knows what the 165's will like, eh?

I got my brass formed a couple of weeks ago. 170gr Elite Hunters, RL33 and gm215m primers at 3190 Looks like the load for this 26" barrel. Last two weeks has given me groups at <.6 moa at 200yds.20200223_095747.jpg

Glad to hear the 170s are working out for you, I never did get them to work well for me. I'm anxious to get my hands on some of the 165 ABLR bullets to try. I also heard that Matrix is able to start shipping to the US again, so we should be able to get his 165gr .277s now.
