is this going to fit?

i have a used bench rest barrel that i picked up, and was wanting to build a bolt gun out of it. i am interested in savage actions, but i dont know if the barrel will fit? the outside diameter of the barrel is 1.350". and no that is not a typo. is this going to work? if not, what would be the recommended type of action that would work? thanks guys, brian

If I an not mistaken it can be done on a Savage barrel but with out the nut. You may have it turned down so the barrel nut fits over the barrel. I am sure more people with tell more and other actions that may work.

A 1.350" shank diameter won't fit with a factory barrel nut. You have three options.

1. Have the barrel shank diameter turned down to 1.115" to fit the nut.

2. Have a custom nut manufactured, but it would probably extend outside the diameter of the action which would look weird and create some inletting issues.

3. Have the barrel installed like on a Remington action, with a shoulder. Any competent gunsmith can do this for $150-$200,including cutting the chamber).

For right around $300 you can get a BRAND NEW, high quality, prefit Savage bbl from a variety of sources. No worn out throat, fire cracked bore, etc.

i am wanting to do the machining myself. this is my first and its a practice gun. the barrel looks to be in mint condition, but....... i am more after the experience, and then the accuracy second. my hope is to make a good shooting rifle, but if i mess up, id rather mess up on a $35 barrel instead of a $250 barrel. so... hopefully ill be able to achieve both. i think that i am going to go the route of the Remington style shoulder, though i am not 100 percent sure how this is done, so back to the "learning" board.

thanks guys for your help, and if you could explain the shoulder, please do. thanks again, Brian
