Is this case stuffed

why so much soot/carbon on the case and neck,,,,what kind and ammount of powder/bullet are you using,,,any crack in a case neck will affect the neck tension which affects accuracy,,,,roger

I have no idea why so much soot on the necks either? I have mentioned this before on here. Im using 139 scenars and 40g H4350.

Trash it.
I'm going to take a wild ass guess that the neck life was effected by the neck trimming and chamber size. Maybe going .283 on the loaded neck next time, thicker neck, less expansion on firing. Also, how are you sizing? with a bushing just to get neck tension? Or an unhoned die that sizes down too far then expanding back up to the size you need? Too much work hardening.

It looks just like my 6-47L as far as soot/carbon on the neck. The crack....not so much.

TRASH IT!!

6 firings!!! It is a tight neck chamber .286 brass is turned down to give loaded round diameter of .281 which is 5 thou clearance or 2.5 thou each side
You turned necks to 8.5thou thick for 5thou neck clearance.
So you sacrifice Lapua necks to make a tight neck chamber sloppy.
How much are you trimming from chamber end?

I think you are spot on, I never turned these cases myself I got them like this from the guy I bought the gun off. I have no idea why he turned them so thin they are sized in a Wilson neck sizer .281 bushing. When I get new cases I will aim for .283 loaded round.

You are right as above these were turned by previous owner and I have no idea why they were turned so thin as above I woulda aimed for .283 loaded round. Chamber is 1.860 long I trim once they get to 1.855 trim them back to around 1.850.

Here is another guess. If you have a .281 loaded round, and a .281 bushing, you essentially have Zero neck tension. If you are not jamming your bullets, the pressure isn't building quick enough to seal the neck to the chamber soon enough to prevent the carbon staining on the cases.

Damn it I think you are spot on that makes a lot of sense and yes there is almost zero neck tension. Man I just found a load at 40g 10 thou off with the 139 scenars if I was to jam them I'm going to have to start load development again this is frustrating to say the least..... is the soot likely doing any damage to the gun do you think? if its not I think I will just leave as is.

I would try to pick up a .279 bushing somewhere to try. that will give you a little tension but not overdo it. If you are going to new brass at .283, your .281 bushing should give you that same .002 tension. Depending on the bullet you are shooting, Jamming may hurt or help. Just my 2 cents, but I would stay with the load and jump you have and try that extra neck tension. Still just guessing, but maybe some of the guys on here who have shot 100,000 more rounds than me can confirm my theory.

Keep your chamber clean of soot buildup, I don't know if the blowby of gases could speed up erosion, another question for those more experienced than me.

thanks guys will scrap it and keep a close eye on the rest cant say I have paid too much attention as they have only had 6 firings and everyone claims a lot more than that for the 6.5x47l but will certainly keep an eye out. And yes I have just annealed all the rest and did an inspection and cant find any more cracked so will be watching from now on.

Once in a while you get a case that has a defect. They don't x-ray case necks for internal defects. A defect could be caused by the severe drawing operation, more likely a tiny iron oxide trapped in the brass from when it was melted at the foundry. Iron oxides can get trapped in molten brass from iron pots and ladles in the foundry. I doubt cartridge brass is made from 99.9% pure electrolytic copper. The specs for cartridge brass usually have something like .05% iron allowed. The iron by analysis exist as a tiny iron oxide. I don't think iron is soluble in molten brass? Iron oxides certainly are not. Cracks are initiated by around these tiny oxides. Variation in factory anneal? Recently FF 100 6BRX cases. One cracked in the shoulder. To me this means that every case isn't exactly the same as they are made.

Wonderfull article.

See figure 7.2 the string of small black particles on the top right and a few near the bottom left should be iron oxides.
