Is this a problem?

After loaning out my .308 case length trimmer i now find that my case necks are trimming to 2.994, which is roughly .011 more than before. The question is, is this to much trimmed off or is it ok? I have searched our site here but not really found the info i needed, so i though i would throw it out here and learn what you think.

This is simply for hunting loads that also get used from time to time for fun from the bench, i should also mention that i am using these in a gas gun and using a light crimp on them as well. As always thanks for any help, blue.

Don't you mean 1.994 inches? Regards JCS

I realize now that i should have said overall case length which lymans is showing at 2.015 rather than the 2.005 i was thinking it at, making it even shorter. And yes i did mean 1.994 rather than 2.994, boy talk about another prime example of old man memory!

Jonbearman this one isn't adjustable and i'll pick up another one this morning, it turns out this one was used for a punch since it was "handy".

So i guess unless someone says not to use them i will load up a couple and see how they group. Anymore thoughts on this anybody? Thanks

Sounds like you might have been using the LEE trimmer/case length gauge. .308 trim length is 2.005" Max length is 2.015". So you're about .011" SHORT of trim length. This can lead to powder/primer residue build up in the neck of the chamber. Regular cleaning of the chamber neck should ease this potential problem. As to your crimp, maybe a problem, maybe not. Depends if your bullet seating depth needs to be changed to get the cannelure into proper position for the crimp. Possibly changing group size. If you have trimmed 20 or fewer cases, why not toss them and get some fresh brass? Just my .02 :)

You are correct gotcha it is/was a lee unit, simply shorter now. There aren't many trimmed that length, (5) however now i wonder how much or if any group change that will make so i will give them a try before deciding to toss them or not.

Reading this backwards ...........

You loaned out your Lee case trimmer for .308 Win .......

.......... and it's come back to you trimming cases shorter than when it left .....

........... correct?

I say on the face of it you have a problem.

That is because your friend abused your tool ........ which can not be adjusted to trim correctly.

Rectification is in order.

Best regards

Sounds like friend filed a little of the tip of the lee pilot to meet his shortest measured case.

No, he said his friend used his trimmer as a punch. The OP meeds a new one, and I'm not talking about the trimmer. ;)

I missed that part skimming through the replies. . I reckon that will do it too.

We're only talking 5 cases? Get a new Lee case gauge as you need to replace the old one anyway. +1 on Eric's advise :)

I never loan out any of my reloading gear, not even my backup Lee trimmers! If I were you I would use your damage Lee trimmer one more time as a punch, and pound it into your "friends" head and leave an impression on his mind. ;)

The above message was brought to you by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Case Trimers. ::)

I suppose the next thing is a little tag on the package of reloaded ammo stating, "All reloading activity was monitored by the SPCCT, and no trimmers were harmed during the processing of these cases." ::)

LOL! .... Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Case Trimmers ;D... Do you have a link so I can join up? Being a stingy old fxxt, Big Ed won't need it. But others could benefit.
