Is There A Good Way To Remove A Glued in Action....

I may need a 12 step program to break this hobby

Is there a good way to remove an action from a glued-in stock, without damaging or distorting the bedding or glued footprint? The next step would be to attach with action screws. Thanks.

My first idea would be to freeze the beast as cold as possible. Shrinks the metal and maybe hitting the barrel on a padded surface will pop it loose.

I second freezing. The alternative is a heat gun on the action. Epoxy melts at about 540ºF so heat treatment of the action should not be an issue.

The proper tool is an iron, but.

New irons don't work, cuz safety shutoff so's it can't melt snowflakes..

The good news is you get to win twice't...... ya buy your wife a brand new iron and take her old one off her hands.

Well OK... maybe I misspoke there. Buying The Ol' Lady an iron prolly ain't the BEST way to make points so maybe go buy one at Goodwill. Or hack a new one.

I put the barrel in a barrel vise. Set the iron on top and hang some weight on the stock. Set a padded surface below to catch it whence't she lets go.

The other bad news is THE BEDDING IS TRASHED!!!! You cannot just screw 'er back in.

The other good news is, it's easy to scrape raw and rebed. Dead easy.

Old hacksaw blades work nicely if your toolless in that regard.

I package it up real nice like and take it to the fed x store.

Glue it back in after you inspect the bedding. Its like seeing if the fridge light goes off when you shut the door. If you cant pull it apart with no heat keep shooting it- its better than the best bolt in bed job you could put on it if you cant pull it apart.

Have any of you guys tried an iron like this?

It's used by model airplane builders to seal and shrink covering material.[/QUO
https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/premium-dry-iron/product/77684 this iron works great it gets plenty hot It has no safety and it doesn’t hold water. I only turn it up to medium in in about 15 minutes glue comes loose

Heat your action wrench up and slide it in the action a couple times. As soon as you can smell something its ready. I sure woulnt un glue one to bed it. Thats going backwards.

Thank you Alex and others.......I guess I should have said "scrape raw and reglue" since it's the surface only that's pulled. When I stated "Bedding Is Trashed!" I meant that the fit is compromised, not that the entire bedding job is compromised.

There is a fairly easy way to do it.
Does it have an installed barrel, and what type of rifle and stock?
