Is There a Difference Between a Golf Range Finder and a Hunting One?

Can a golf rangefinder work for, say, varmint hunting?

Sure...depending on model it will even tell you what club to use:rolleyes:. I have a Leupold GX-3 for the course that I sometimes use to range non-critter type targets...but small game might be more of a challenge depending on size, reflectivity, and background. A quality hunting model would likely be better but if you already have a golf one, give it a try.

That was funny :-)

On a similar vein, we downsized 3 years ago and currently live in a golf community and our house overlooks one of the fairways and green. When people ask me if I play golf, I say my idea of shooting golf is putting the ball at a 100 yards and putting a hole through it with my rifle. So one day I thought what would it be like. I had my 22 with me so I put the ball at 50 yards. 3 different shots hot the ball. only one penetrated the golf ball. Those things are as hard as woodpecker lips.

I use a golf rangefinder for shooting and a shooting rangefinder for golf! Bought a Bushnell 1000 yd about 8 years ago and found it topped out at about 7-800 yds on non reflecting targets. Cut to a few years ago and the Bushnell 1 mile golf rangefinder is about $300 cheaper than the shooting rangefinder. The angle compensation is different for each sport so one has to understand those limitations, but for straight ranging, I've had great luck!

Soooo, all joking aside, you can use a golf range finder but it may not pick up smaller targets like prairie dogs. It also will not work as far. But should work up to 500 yards?

Up to 500 yds may be questionable...check specs before you buy a golf model. Eg. my GX-3 ratings are Reflective - 800 yds, Trees - 600 yds, Pins - 450 yds. And yes, unless your prarie dogs are under a large billboard (ie. close to a prominent feature), they will probably be difficult to range.
