Is the Eliseo R5 available in .308 Win

Hello all,

I have a Palma rifle build in my future and I've been looking at the Eliseo stocks. I plan a build on a 700 short action: I'll probably cash in some gift cards + rebate on a Dick's 700 SPS Varmint.

I don't need a repeater now, but thought I might get one just in case I wanted to use the gun across the course. The gun may end up being a switch barrel. I looked at the RTS stock, but someone told me to get an R5 in .308 as the Eliseo mags were cheaper than AICS mags. I have never seen an R5 in .308. Does one exist?

It would be best to call and talk to Gary yourself. He will be more than happy to answer any questions and set you on the right path. The number is: 1-714-630-5734 Also Pierce Precision builds alot of them and they could help you out also.

No, the biggest the R5 will go is the 6XC / 6.5X47 or maybe the 6.5 Creedmore loaded short. You'll have to go RTS bottom metal for the repeater. You can do the R1 bottom metal with a mag well filler block for Palma.

You should check out his webpage. http://www.competitionshootingstuff.com/id26.html I think this is something you will want to look at.

JJ,
i have an elesio RTS "Target" model the picture is on gary's website. more Pictures to follow, sorry Gary. I used a rem SA ..308 bolt. i am shooting .260. you use AI mags with it. But Yes the repeater in .308 is a reality. The RTS Target model has the R5 handguard butt stock and thumb stud on it(for rapids). the normal RTS has the verticle grip in the but stock and rails. tell Gary where you are trying to go and he will get you there quickly!!
Cheers,
Doc

Lee,
The OP is building a Palma rifle. It must be .308 or .223.

My RTM is shot in both Palma and High Power. I have both lowers and .308 and .284 Win barrels. The attached image is wearing the .308 barrel. Mine is a Pierce long action repeater and may also be seen on Gary's site.

Steve,

I'm interested in the switch barrel setup. How do you change out the barrels and how easy is it? I've seen barrels with socket heads but I think that would interfere with the front sight mounting tenon.

This tube gun/Palma rifle project is on hold due to the cost of rebarreling. I can cash in some gift cards and rewards certs at Dick's and get a good deal on a 700 and strip it. However, they all come in slow-twist 22-250 or 223. If the Eliseo stock can accommodate a Savage-style barrel nut I may be able to do this project myself.

I considered an S1 stock, but don't like the nonavailability of upgrade triggers.

It is pretty easy to change a barrel. On a Remington-type action, I use a barrel vise and action wrench. For a Savage, I use the barrel vise and a barrel nut wrench. Savages can also be fitted with a nut-less barrel. You should use a "GO" gauge to set headspace when using a barrel nut.

The Eliseo rifles with Remington-style actions use a disc, supplied by CSS, to replace the recoil lug. The barrel must be headspaced to the disc. The S1 chassis uses a cup to mount the handguard. I think that it still uses the barrel nut. A call to Gary would resolve that question.

There are several upgrade triggers for Savages. Rifle Basix makes the SAV-2 and Sharp Shooter Supply supplies both the Competition and Evolution triggers. My two 12F rifles have Evolutions but SSS seems to be having delivery problems. The SAV-2 is well regarded, although I have not used one. The Savage target action is a reasonable path. You can buy the action alone and build from there.

Will do one of these days. Maybe I can persuade him to make an "M1" for the 98/Vz24 actions. That would keep costs down.

Where do you shoot out of Doc? I shoot at AGC-Marriottsville usually, but venture outward for competitions (Meade & Bridgeville).

Gary would have to proto type a new stock for a diffrent action, not cheep. No, just put together the pieces and get the right rifle. These are very flexible stocks. Go the Remmington tube gun route, get a Remmy heavy barrel varmint rifle in 243 or 308 have somebody recut the shoulder on the barrel for the recoil disk. Use the factory trigger, throw a scope off one of your hunting rifles and go shoot it. Get sights, a trigger and a good barrel as you can. should be about 1600 to get started.

Get a target stock with an RTS bottom metal.

Call Gary - he'll spend a few minuites with you.

Mike

Mike that was the idea: find a 308 varmint gun and strip the stock. Leave upgrading the trigger as a later option and throw on an extension tube for use with iron sights. Keep gunsmithing to a minimum. I estimate a rebarrel job would run $600 including action truing.

I'd use the scope on my varmint AR and save up for decent irons.

Unfortunately I just missed a good sale at Dick's. My local store only had slow twist .22-250s (1:14) and .223 (1:12). Another store apparently had .308s but i got the word too late.

I don't have much opportunity to reload, otherwise I'd do .260 Rem or one of the 6mm BR siblings. I chose .308 for commercial availability. Fast twist .223 would work as I always have a lot of 75 BTHP lying around.

Figure a fitted barrel at 500 and a fair cleanup / bushed pin / Sako extractor at 350. Match Iron sights at 800

Sorry.

I got a Wally World youth 243 and sold the barrel and stock. That got me a Kreiger barreled Action and trigger for 800. You could use the Remmy barrel for midrange and a year or so, but, you'll out grow that barrel quickly.
