Is the 6 PPC w/ 68 gr. bullets suitable for 300 yd score competition?

To that question I say yes.......if the conditions are not completely rotten. I believe that the pure accuracy of the 6PPC will overcome its disadvantage of its inferior BC. We had our monthly 300 yard match today and I decided to shoot the PPC. My equipment was as follows: BAT mod. B w/ 10-50X Sightron scope; Bartlein 13.5 twist barrel; Leonard stock; and a load of 29.3 gr. N133 with Bart's 68 gr. BT seated to just touch the lands.

Today, we had bright sunshine and a right to left wind w, velocity to ~8 mph. The wind was somewhat tricky in that there were constant pickups and let offs. One had to be very careful and not get caught. We shoot 3, 10-shot groups for score only. I was lucky enough to win with a 296/2X . I was the only shooter of the 19 that showed up that shot a PPC. There was a wide assortment of chamberings used with several Dashers, some 6.5 X 47's , 6 BR's and even a .22/.250. With my second consecutive victory using the 6 PPC, we may see some more try it in the future. James Mock300 yd. w 6PPC 002.JPG

That is great shooting at 300 yards with a PPC
At our range a Kenmore Washington some of the top shooters also shoot the PPC at 300 and do very well
Khanh

In IBS VFS, the 6 PPC will show up occasionally at 300 yard events, typically 1 entrant out of 25. Even with those odds it does do well. Harley Baker won one last year (used a 65 gr). Kevin Donalds Jr. a 2nd in the last year or 2 and Roy Hunter a 4th a few years ago. There may be more......I just quickly scanned the results. FWIW there were 14 300 yard aggs contested in IBS last year.

IMO, BC isn't nearly as critical in score as group. In score, you are only scored by the rings and their respective spacing vs every thousandth of an inch, in group. Regardless of bc, or the game...group or score.....If you miss a switch, I'll bet a lot of money that the bullet doesn't go where you wanted it to very often.

At 300, a very small, subtle switch can blow a shout out 1/2". In group shooting, that would turn a very solid .3xx into a not so shiny .8xx group. In score, a 10 could still be a 10.

All that said, if the higher bc can shoot equally well as the lower...It's still an advantage, be it group or score.

I played this bc game in the caliber neutral UBR format a few years back and even won some wood, shooting a 10 twist 6br with 87 vld's. It can work. I'm anxious to see how my 6 Grendel with 80 grainers does, when the reamer comes. This combination seems to have potentially equal accuracy to a ppc but with a significant bc edge. Time will tell.

James congratulations I think you have already found and knew the answer, at short range its still the king as much as they try to take it down.
