Is the 6 Br still the king

Bottom Fodder

I’m new to this game but trying to learn from what I have read on shooting sites and match reports it seams with in its limits the 6 Br which if I’m right was built from the ground up for match competition. and it’s brass has been the starting place for wildcats for competition shooting. But guess shooting life would be boring if everyone on the line was shooting a 6 Br.
so what are some of its limitations and what’s really the advantages of some of its offsprings
just trying to learn before I jump in
thanks

It's a cartridge for lazy people like myself. Lapua brass is available, no need to fireform. There a plenty of well known powder+bullet combinations. Even if you are new to reloading, you can just copy a recipe like 30gr of Varget+ 0.020" of the lands and in worst case scenario it will group 0.5 moa at 100m for a 5-shot group.
The limitation for me is its ability to buck the wind at longer distances.

The limitations for comp. is 600yds. With the availability of quality brass for the 6 Dasher, I would suggest looking into that, it gives you that extra to be competitive out to 1000yds. There are other 6mm's that will effectively get you there as well, but you asked about the 6BR variants..............Happy Shooting

Regards
Rick

I have a 6BR and a a 6BRX for varmint hunting. Ideal for varmint hunting. Not an expert but from what I have read the 6BR is not used for SR bench rest. It's better at 300 yds. plus. If you are going to buy a barrel I would get a 6BRX. Just shoot to FF. 100-150 fps more than a 6BR. Equal to a Dasher. Get a twist that matches the wt. bullet you intend to shoot.

Rick, I have a good friend that shot a 6br in 1000 yard competition. He did very well. In fact he took SOY using it. So a 6br in good hands can do very well at 1000.

Went to the range today with my high milage BR to get a P-dog load for next week. I brought 5 loads and had a hard time picking one.
90 grain Bergers, -.006, 8 twist, Varget 5 shots @100.
It's hard to make em shoot bad

Books can be written and have been written on the subject, my personal opinion is just start with a standard 6BR, find yourself a competent gunsmith that knows the cartridge. Chamber it for the bullets you want to shoot with the appropriate twist. If you stick with competitive shooting you’ll probably evolve and be trying some of the 6BR variants before long. When your barrel quits ya you will have learned loads about the cartridge, reloading, capabilities, limitations etc etc and then can keep shooting it or try something new. It really is the easy button and there is lots and lots of info on it and it’s offsprings right here on the forum.

Got into the 6.8 SPC. Smaller that a .308 but bigger that the .223. Happened to pick up a piece of brass at the range. Never saw one before. :) Shot bug holes!!
Got to thinking, if the 6BR was such a hot item along with the 30BR, why not a 6.8 BR?
Built a dummy round, shipped it off and had a reamer cut. Come to find out, it was a first in that caliber for the reamer cutters.
Bushing in the 6BR dies for the neck and I was in business. Picked up a barrel, shipped it off and had it chambered. Turned out to be a bug hole maker.
Only problem with the 6BR, BOARING!! You need to take something else besides the 6BR when you go shooting. How many bug holes do you really need?? :D:D

I looked at that SPC case and said Hmmnnnn......The guys took
the more then popular 6br and catted it into the 30br which has
been making news, but in the short game.....How about going back
in time to around 1906 when the 30 Remington hit the fields. You
shorten that neck up a bit, and go have some fun......I'm always in
for a new cat, and just don't happen to currently own a 30 ?? And
unlike a 6.8, there is many custom 30 bullets out there......Need to
buy another stove cause I'm getting short on back burners.....

The 6BR, and it’s variants, can be described as one of the most successful cartridges ever introduced.

That is, in every Discipline except the one that it was initially intended for, that being 100/200 yard Group Benchrest.

It was conceived to go head to head with the 6PPC in short range Group competition.

It won’t.

But when Norma introduced their version with a longer throat to utilize higher BC bullets in the 100+ grn range, it found it’s true calling.
