Is the 22 nosler stickin around?

Had a 22 nosler in my hand today and I gotta say I kinda want to put one together in a bolt gun. It was a neat little round. Do you guys think this case will stick around or dissapear? 17 fireball was my fav then it dissapeared but atleast I can form the brass as to where the 22 nosler your on your own if it vanishes. Any thoughts? Id keep it a 300 yard give or take gun, prob 20-22" 12 or even 14 twist. Nothin over 50 gr.

Who knows but I don't see the need for it. The 223 Rem will do it all out to 250 yards and if you need to go further the 22 250 or 243 will do the job. These cartridges will be around forever and there are a tons of rifles to choose from so why complicate your life unless you like things complicated.

Problem is ive had them all and Im bored lol. Im a sucker for a "neat" looking round. Always have been. Anyone on here build one in a bolt gun?

While I have no first hand experience, I have read about guys using 6mm Hagar brass and converting it to 22 Nosler. This would provide another brass option should the 22 Nosler go away.

If I was a more sensitive person you would hear that I was appalled by various ammo/component companies abandoning some cartridge after aggressively promoting it - .300 RSAUM, 7mm RSAUM, .223 Win SSMag, .243 Win SSMag, .257 Win SSMag, .17 Mach2, .17 Rem, .300 RCM, .338 RCM, .307 Win, .30 Rem AR, 8mm Rem Mag, and possibly more. At least there was a good reason they quit major production of the 6.5X50 and 7.7X58 Japanese. It is possible with some effort or expense to get brass for these rounds but commonly they are not an easily available commodity. Having no .17Mach 2 ammo might require a re-barrel job to .22 LR. All initially good ideas but ultimately economic fizzles. In addition, I would be unhappy to lose some 25-50% of my AR ejected .22 Nosler brass in the weeds while shooting varmints.

I suspect that the ammo manufacturers (read Federal) will promote the .224 Valkyrie like the Creedmoor. Early indications point to better ballistics than the Nosler round. I think for a new cartridge to succeed it must develop its own fan base and I don’t think the 22 Nosler has accomplished this. I talked to my gunsmith about building one using a Model 7 action but believe I’ll wait til I know more about the 224 Valkyrie.

To my pea brain, if it's not in an AR platform, it's a waste of time at the additional expense of lost performance. The round was built to be almost as good as a 22-250 but in an AR friendly case. When you move to a bolt gun, there is no advantage at all, moreover it's at a further disadvantage when you can have far greater ammo options and not loose the performance with the 22-250 that it was designed to mimic. If I was looking at a hotrod 22 in an AR platform, the Valkyrie holds far more appeal with its increased performance. If I am looking at a hotrod 22 bolt gun, I will stick to my 22cm for a wildcat or a 22-250 if I was forced to run factory ammo. The 22 Nosler in a bolt gun just doesn' make sense to me. I get the mystique of having a niche cartridge and fall into that catagory with my 22cm, but I want the horsepower on target, not some cool name engraved on the side of the barrel. Not saying that my opinion is right, but if I was going to the trouble of a custom chambering I would want to make sure that "the juice was worth the squeeze".

personally i wouldnt waste my time with a 22 nosler in a bolt gun- but heck if you want to do it go for it. Just make sure your barrel shank is long enough to be able to cut off the 22 nosler chamber and use it for another caliber.

20 cal is the new kick. 22 is fading. Nosler should neck the 22 Nosler down to 20 cal if they want it to take off commercially.

I wasn't always into varmint shooting. My first center fire varmint rifle I ever bought was a Rem 700 - 204 Ruger when the cartridge took the market by storm in 2005. I've since built many other custom 20 cal rifles. The only centerfire 22 cal varmint rifles Ive ever owned are two 556's in an AR15s and a 22 Hornet. The one 556 AR15 is now a 20 TAC and Im getting another barrel to do the same with the other AR. The 22 Hornet was sold and the brass was re-purposed to replace that rifle with a 20 Ackley Hornet. I love my 20 cals :)

I also have a handful of 6mm rifles as well that I use for varminting. 6mm Rem, 243 LBC T40, and 6mm Creedmore.

Baiscally I don't want anything to do with 22 cal. Nothing about them impresses me. Ballistics are lacking compared to 20 and 6mm. So I stick to 20's for little critters and 6mm for long range bigger critters.

If you like the 22 Nosler now would be a good time to stock up on brass. I see zero need for it.

BTW, the 17 REM is far from dead.

I would say the 22 N is dying fast. Interest in the 26 Nosler already seams to be waining a bit. Time will tell though.

Further more why not build a 22PPC, better brass, better accuracy. What is their not to like? Oh wait the big manufacturers don't like accurate cartridges because they can't make money on them.

22 Nosler vs. 224 Valkyrie

Both are with 30° shoulders and overall they are dimensionally similar.

The Nosler case neck is .039” shorter than the Valkyrie neck.

The Nosler is all of a thousandth or two less in diameter at .200” up and at the body to shoulder transition.

The 22 Nosler case from head to neck to shoulder junction is .189” longer than same of the 224 Valkyrie …

The Nosler’s to overflow case capacity is 34.2gr H2O, the Valkyrie capacity is 30.53gr, like 3.67gr less than …

Now but for the unleashing of the 20 Nosler. Except in caliber, it’s what the 22 Nosler case could’ve been …

The 20 Nosler case is .085” longer, head to shoulder datum, than same for the 22 Nosler. The shorting was due lawyers’ attempt at preventing Stupid from closing the bolt on a 223 Rem. round in the Nosler’s chamber.

Neck up from 204 to 224 and the now “22 Nosler Restored” case body is ~ .274” longer than the Valkyrie’s …

Better than 1/4” more go powder room more than likely equals a good bit more than a bit more horsepower.
