is the 22 hornet joining "the has beens"?

a friend called last night. he was having a hard time finding 22 hornet brass...he lives, sleeps, and shoots the hornet. there are a lot of small case cartridges now that exceed the hornet in all preformance catergories. he tells me most of the sources are "out of stock". is it the 22 hornet's time to retire ? thanks.

I myself have never been able to get a hornet to shoot, so mu opinion of the hornet isn't very high however I would imagine this would be a case of demand, I imagine it's a small demand so they only run it once in a while. I have a lot of brass for a hornet and someday I am going to build a complete custom from the ground up in hornet because I don't like being beat!

North of the border there is all sorts of .22 Hornet brass. If there is a shortage in the U.S. of certain components such as primers a few years ago the shelves would be empty up here.

Is it possible that the "out of stock" is due to the Hornet being very popular in your area and the brass is being sold as soon as it comes into the stores?

I suppose that could be the case as well I have never had a problem in the past getting it here in Washington state but haven't looked for it lately either.

Bozo699, I have a Winchester Pre 64 Carbine in 22 Hornet. I couldn't get it to shoot either until I switched to Lil Gun powder. Groups went from 1 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch, five shot groups with velocity at 3000 fps using a 40 gr pill. My guess is the call for Hornet brass is not too great so dealers aren't stocking it.

Many years ago when I was a young Navy Officer I took over a Navy Ordnance outfit and as part of the procedure I held an inventory of all our ammo, firearms and equipment. One storage magazine held 200,000 rounds of 22 hornet ammo for the 22 Hornet / 410 Ga. survival rifle that used to be standard equipment for pilots. We had no such rifles in the inventory so the ammo was surplus. I transferred the ammo to our special service account and made it available to guys on base. I ended up with 3000 rounds. At the time I had a 22 K Hornet and never had to buy another round of ammo for it. It didn't shoot very well but fireformed very nicely. I have since sold that rifle and the empty cases with it. Wish I had held on to it and more of the ammo.

No, the reason he can't find brass is the new 17 Hornet and other variants. People are realizing the "Old" Hornet case isn't weak and puney when used in other forms (22K, 17AH, ect.) Trust me, you'll see an even bigger shortage when the 17HH comes out. Adam

I know a top rate gunsmith here in Louisvile Ky (Gary Romans) that owns the finest reamer and knows what he's doing to go to 22 K hornet..which really opens up new horizons as far as powder and primers go! As well as being just plain superior in all respects.

thanks for the info. my buddy found some inexpensive 22 hornet brass from privi-partizen? neither he or i have any experience with this brand. i've seen the name but wonder if anybody has anything to say good or bad about this brass or the brand. thanks again.

Never used the Priv-Partizan 22 Hornet, but I have used a good bit of their stuff in other calibers. Generally pretty good stuff, nothing to complain about. Should be boxer primed and non-corrosive, and they have bought a lot of their bullets from another maker located here in Sedalia, MO, if you get my drift.

A number of hand gun Sil shooter are using the hornet in reg and hunter class, mostly in TC's. very good results be sure the bbl is .224 as a lot of early guns were .223 and this causes an accurcy problem.

I am glad I have 500 of them I guess! When reading most complains about the hornet not being accurate, it seems with many the Ruger 77/22 hornet is a common thread. My little H&R superlight likes Lil Gun and sp primers with a 40 grain V max. I want to try the Alliant 300MP also. Mine is a std, not a K

Save yourself several hundred and by a CZ 527, 40gr Vmax and some AA1680 powder. FS

I find your statement a odd statement on a accurate shooting forum, most here are trying for the most accuracy out of there rifles,..ie MOA or better at 100 yards and in most cases much better then MOA. For pie plate accuracy I usually use a tight choked 10 gauge or a open sighted 30-30 however I appreciate your honesty. To the op it seems by your replies that the little hornet is far from dead and doing well especially north of the border, I am glad your friend found some brass and if Kevin said other brass of that brand was satisfactory I wouldn't hesitate buying it with confidence

Hedditch I will try your recipe sometime, glad your pre 64 is a shooter, that would be a neat rifle to own.

The .22 K Hornet is actually a great round and in the right rifle very accurate and I personally feel it def. has a place in the 200yd. and under urban varmit role. Low sound signature, 3150fps w/ 35gr. V max or a little less w/ 40gr. I have killed a few large woodchucks w/ the 35gr. V max and it hammers them. Nothing that a .223 wouldn't do, but just a nice "pop" and dead Varmit! I hate to see it dieing off.
