Is Sierra out of their minds??

I called a friend of mine who is a dealer and ask him to see if he could get me some of the new 123grMKs, his cost is around $125 to 130 a box for the 500 lot. I thought he must be using the wrong number or something. Then I see an add this morning where they are asking over $33 a box for them!!!! What are them made out of gold!!

Here at Sinclair, we do not like the higher prices that we are forced to work with either, especially with all of us on the sales staff being shooters ourselves and being affected as well, along with everyone else. What is happening, the futures markets are going crazy and driving the prices of the raw materials out of the roof that are used, being copper, brass, and lead! As one can imagine, this is having an impact on the finished products that we use in our sport. Sierra has had, if I am correct, three price increases already this year. Hornady has also increased prices, as well as Barts Bullets. So I do not see much relief for a let up in the prices of bullets, and brass, in the near term. One of my brothers works in a local scrapyard, and he has told me that the prices they are paying for scrap copper, brass, and lead, have been going up like crazy, and this seems to support what all of us are seeing for what we have to pay for brass and bullets.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

33.61 is MSRP...you won't actually pay that much...that is 1$ less per 100 than the 142.

I hear Clinch Rivers will be 50$/100 in case that makes you feel any better...raw material prices are going up...

We just had some electrical work done in our office and between the time of the bid and the work being done, the price of the copper more than doubled :mad: We are dealing with some big wire at 200 feet; the price went from $10,000 to $28,000. That, my friends, will buy a lot of bullets.

I wonder if there is some speculation in the market?

If custom bullet maker "A" sees that custom bullet maker "B" is charging X number of dollars more than he's getting for the same product he'd be crazy not to raise his price. If there are people clamoring to buy his bullets regardless of price in the false belief that they are magic and will win matches so why shouldn't he charge $50 a hundred if there are people stupid enough to pay it? There are always guys out there with more money than brains willing to pay whatever price, and not just for bullets. The only way to stop the price gouging is to switch brands to reverse the madness.
I know, I know, the argument that you've spent XXX$$$$ on that rifle whats .50 cents a piece for bullets? Well with logic like that why don't we just make it an even buck and be done with it. Sometime you just gotta say enough is enough!

Dam Chinese have been buying a shet load of copper, tin, aluminum, etc to fuel their "industrial revolution". I guess the backyard steel and Mao's vision has been replaced by western style industry.

The Chinese really aren't Communist anymore. They are Pirate Capitalists in that they don't pay for patents and don't honor copy rights. RND...wtf is that. Buy one or buy the company and then see how they do it. Then pay the workers 3 cents a day...gee I wonder why so many things say made in China!

Don't let a little reality like the rising price of copper,a key ingredient in bullet making) get in the way of your dream world.

JER,

I may be in a dream world, but so is Clinch River if they think I'm going to pay $50.00 a hundred for a 6MM 106 grain VLD when I can buy Berger 105 grain VLD's for $19.55 a hundred!,Thank you Sinclair!)
Like I said before there are those that will pay any price.
I'm just not one of them.

Danny, you'd better buy all those bullets fron Sinclair. The next ones they get will be higher I can promise you. I've been buying J4 jackets for less than 1 year and have seen over 50% increase in price. Since I started making bullets I've developed a great respect for people who make them for sale to others. All I had to do for years was hand money to Al or Kenny or Brian and walk away with 2 or 3 thousand bullets. After cutting 2000 30 cal cores last night i have to wonder if buying those dies was a smart move. The old shoulder is "talking outloud" this morning.

Sorry guys didn't mean to stir the pot up and I know copper and such has gone up but then it should also relfect in the cost of the the other bullets too.

I just couldn't understand why they were charging so much for this "NEW" bullet compared to what you can get a 120MK or a 142 for.

Hey Eddie,

Glad to hear from you. Yes, I know there will be a price increase but definitely not that dramatic. I just think it's crazy to look at fifty cents each and to just blindly accept it as the price of doing business when others are charging less than half that per hundred.

I keep saying that one of these days I'll sell all this shooting paraphernalia and take the wife to Europe for a month or buy a new FJ Cruiser. I bet I'd still have money left over! LOL!

It may have to do with the timing of material purchases. Perhaps they have tons of drawn jackets bought with cehaper copper for the 120s and 142s.

I guess asking Sierra is the only way to find out.

JB,
The thing is the dealer my son was getting bullets from sill wanted more for the 123s than even the 142s. I believe it was nearly $20+ more for a box of 500. The guy he gets them from gives him a jobber price on all of his stuff because of the quanity he buys and the fact that they are shooting buddies.

I haven't bought any 142s lately I have been using the 140s because my 260 likes them better but when I used to buy them they were less than a dollar a box more than the 140s as I recall. That is why I thought is so unusual about the price difference. Thanks for the reply!!

Raptor -- then it seems it is your supplier that is "out of his mind" not Sierra...Sierra has them priced comparably, they can't control what your guy sells them for...that was my point in all this...

Boys,
I purchased 4 bags of magnum 7.5 shot last night....It was $107.00 including tax. Not too long ago it was $15.00 a 25 lb bag.

Lead shot has gone up dramatically in that last 18 months..

It does not pay to reload the 12 or 20ga anymore, on 28's and .410's you still save some bucks because good ammo is $8.00 a box of 25.

Based on your reported cost of lead shot, a box of 25 12 ga loads still costs me $3.85 to reload. Since I use premium components, I need to compared that to something like Remington Premiers or Winchester AAs. I've yet to see either of those brands go below $4/box even in 12 gauge.
