Is Reticle choice always the first consideration?

I am planning to by a nightforce scope for Benchrest shooting with a .22lr. My plan was on getting a new scope with the NP-2DD recital, because it appears to be the best choice for BR and Like most men I find double DDs to be, perfect. Then along comes a friend with the exact same scope, but it has the NP-R2 recital. It's a used scope but in perfect condition so it comes down to just the recital choice. The price difference will be $300. Will the NP-R2 be a disadvantage in BR? No I'm not the kind of man who will buy a scope from a friend at a discount and turn around and sell it for a profit.

Anthonyt95628: Interesting question, I have NF BR's in both reticles. Bought 3 with the 2DD & liked them very much, then bought another with the R2 & many times think I like it even more.

Don't know how it would apply to shorter ( 100 yd. max?) distances with smallbore, but for the longer distances ( 200 yd+) I see that it has it's advantages.

Was out last week, lousy weather, finished basic sight-in at 100, wanted to get out further but adjacent ranges were heavily in use, conflict in going downrange, my time limited, scoped out a used tgt. at 200 yds., saw several areas that were free of bullet holes & with the hold-off hash marks on the R2 I was easily able to fire several 5 shot groups on that previousely used tgt. Could not have done that with a 2DD reticle.

You can't go wrong with either reticle choice, but if you buy the R2 & don't like it, contact me & we might be able to work out a trade. All 3 of my 2DD's cannot be told from new. fds

Could I assume then that you may consider selling it at cost or perhaps less? I may be willing to take it off your hands!

No experience with the 2DD, but I really like the R2.

Welcome to the forum.

FDSHUSTER good to see weather did not deter you from a day at the range. I was out Sunday afternoon fighting a 15-25 mph wind. Those darn little 40gr 22s sure get pushed around a bunch. I switched over to .223 and saved the day from a total loss.

I Liked your observations on the recitals and they were very timely. I was having to hold about three inches to the left Sunday and with the Weaver t36 I have on the Anschutz it was only a guesstimate as to what 3 inches was. Certainly no way to be consistent with POA so I was very disappointed with the results, but heck it was fun anyway.

I take it that you prefer a larger bore, something in the 6mm range maybe?

I shoot four NF benchrest scopes and LOVE the R2 reticle. DD2 is nice but is difficult to estimate windage hold over.
Try the R2.
Good Shooting

I shooter 22lr BR and use an R2 scope. Also consider a scope level. Depending on your rifle and ammunition you may need a 20 MOA base for your scope. I use one on my Turbo rifle. The DD model is better for long range and a caliber greater than 22lr.
Good luck and keep shooting
