Is my 6brai die really a 6br?

I have taken a bunch of dies down and on the bottom any carbide tool will make it seem not hardened. Its only hardened a few thou deep its not tool steel.
It’s possible that Whidden paints the end with “no-carb” just for this situation.

Another possible reason is the carburizing would overharden the bottom where there is a thin wal and it would become brittle.

I’m certainly not an expert either but I’m struggling here so as a question, let’s take Wilson for example: the die is hardened beyond a grade 8 so what tool would a person use to - take a little off ?

Secondly to what hardness are shell holders ?
Surface grinder is what a friend used to cut one down for me awhile back.

It’s a 6br die. People make mistakes. Sure they will make it right. Someone shooting a 6br may have your custom die.

I bought a set of Forster go and no go gauges for 6br. They were wrong. I called Forster and the fella I talked to is the guy that checks the dimensions of the gauges after they are made. They probably just got miss marked . I sent them to him and he replaced them with the correct ones with a nice note. I was happy.

Got a reply from whidden. He agrees it appears to be the wrong die. He apologized and said he wants to make it right.. Thanks for the help.

Dies are case hardened. While it is only .005 to .010 deep, it does take carbide and a little more than usual tool force to break through it.

Like others, that “just take about .020 off the bottom” is not what I would want to hear.

What happens now to the die you had altered? Does he take that back ?

I know this thread is old but fwiw my whidden die was the same way, a little trim and she was good to go. It was either that of wait two weeks for turn around time. I had the rifle shop take a little off on a large but a bench grinder and various sandpaper would have been fine too. But in all honesty I use an older forester custom grind I bought second hand now. It’s perfect. I would sell the whidden set and buy a Redding dasher set and shave that one or just a Redding dasher seater and harrels sizer
