is it shooting or hunting??

I imagine it is just as illegal to "shoot" a deer as it is to "hunt" a deer in TX with out a license as it is in any state, but I get your point.

I like the idea of walk and stalk but the body ain't what it used to be, need to keep my options open.

Jim,
In spite of the way my post comes across, a morning spent slipping through a river bottom after deer, squirrels, hogs, ducks,or just looking and listening to the woods is my idea of true hunting.
Sometimes, I can better see and observe deer sitting still in a blind. Both ways serve a purpose.

The good thing about hunting is that you can do it any time, any place and for any animal. Just be sure you are not carrying a weapon. A lot of people call this scouting.

Shooting on the other hand requires that you follow the seasonal rules, with the appropriate weapons and stay withing the limits of animals you can take. And of course, with the appropriate licenses. If you break any of these rules you may find yourself shopping for a new vehicle, a new gun and a new place to live because this will not make the wife happy that you forfeited these items because you didn't purchase the appropriate tags.

Went mushroom hunting this weekend. i go every spring here in southern IL. Crawling around in the woods looking closely next to trees in thick brush. Pulled 3 ticks off me when i was done and i was soaked in sweat. Alot harder than sitting in a tree stand and waiting for a deer to shoot! Is that hunting?
Mushroom HUNTING is a Big challenge , Get the wrong ones and you could be dead! I never had the skill to know the good ones from the bad ones!!!!!!!!! :)

I agree whole heartedly on scouting is hunting. I also go moose hunting here in the Bighorn Motns of Wyoming all the time. But since tags are impossible to get, All my moose get shot with a Digital camera!

I still remember the one and only time I ever went hunting. My uncle took me in late october really early one morning out to a tree stand. I was about 8-10 at the time don't recall it to well just the events. I was stumbling and tripping through the woods in the dark as we made our way to the stand. We sat up in the tree stand for hours but it only felt like 15 minutes. I did everything I could to keep quit but we didn't see any deer. On the way back he let me carry the rifle after he unloaded it. That day for lunch he made venison that he had in the fridge and we ate that. My first time eating venison and hunting! The day before the hunt he even let me shoot his muzzle loader at a paper plate stuck in a log. This one weekend were I only fired a gun once is the most vivid memory I have. Ever since then I have done nothing with my life but pursue firearms and shooting sports (but not hunting for some reason). I love what I do because that man took me into a tree stand and didn't complain once how I was being a noisy kid.
He died the other day in a way that can only be described as heartbreaking and unexpected. I miss the hell out of him but am glad as any man can be that I got to hang out with him for one weekend in my entire life.

I've been reading this thread with a lot of interest, hope this doesn't get me in too much trouble.

A few weeks ago we went in with some friends on a pig. We got our knives, butcher paper, seasonings etc together and then we shot the pig. It is just the first step in the process.

When we hunt its pretty much the same idea. We hunt for food and while we're careful to be in compliance with all the dnr regs, we're going to make it as simple a process as possible.

.269James,
The Moose 'thing' is the same here in Montana. I live just a short distance from the Bob Marshall Wilderness area so that is where I apply for my tag. I have been applying for that area for a long time so I have plenty of bonus points. Doesn't matter, every year I get a check back for $75.00 with the 'Strike-out' letter. Wish I could sell bonus points. Heck, if I draw a tag now I will need to hire a SHERPA to carry my deccreped butt in to the 'Bob'. Pretty rugged place. And of course, they only allow 1 tag in area 151. But, somebody has to draw it! So, I keep applying.

Mushrooms the same way; been putting in forever but never draw. :)
