is it shooting or hunting??

Years back a guy I know told me that anybody could shoot a big buck with a rifle, but, to shoot a big buck with a bow was a true way to show your hunting skills. I asked him if he had ever rifle hunted before and when he said yes, I asked how many big bucks he had shot. he said none, and I laughed .......
To me as long as you are not in a game farm and are hunting legally you are hunting. IF you are hunting in a enclosed blind all day and don't shoot, what were you doing all day? cliffe

Why would we care which method of hunting you do or anyone else?
If you enjoy it then that is what matters.

That is why we live in the good ole USA!

We were in camp a few years ago changing a flat tire. A small herd of deer come grazing by camp with a lone small buck in the group. I grabbed a gun out of the truck, leaned over a table we had set up and dropped him in his tracks.

Is that hunting, shooting or automotive repair?

I also like to watch Uncle Ted, hunting or in concert. I have to say though, he sure can be off on his arrow placement. On one episode, he shot a buck way way back (in the butt) but quickly noted that he thought he may have hit an artery and is was ok and he would wait awhile before looking for him. Later in the show they found the deer but didn't say if they waited 2 hours or 2 days before they found him. You have to love his enthusiasm and drive. He is a wild man for sure.

Good one otter!! ;D ;D ;D Man you need help!! :D :D

I think the difference between hunting and shooting is whether the intended target was placed there by someone or not. Example: "Pen hunt" or target shooting = Shooting Sitting in a stand, walking, stalking, or laying in wait = Hunting. JMHO. ;)WD

Went mushroom hunting this weekend. i go every spring here in southern IL. Crawling around in the woods looking closely next to trees in thick brush. Pulled 3 ticks off me when i was done and i was soaked in sweat. Alot harder than sitting in a tree stand and waiting for a deer to shoot! Is that hunting?

Could we just call it harvesting?

A major improvement over the last 50 or so years is, we no longer just take from the land like we did when we were "hunting". Now we are returning something to it by proper game management. Planting food plots, controlling over population, feeding programs, predator control, etc.

Re: is it shooting or hunting?? THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT

Well, you have all been helpful in establishing the variety of opinions, thank you

i guess the pattern is something like this

if it is legal so what - agree
it may be called sniping when at a long distance - ok been there done that
it may be harvesting when meat is preserved,- ok been there done that
it may be game control on planted fields (fencedor not) to produce the "better herd" - ok
for older or limited ability folks adapt to the needs to allow continued activity - agree
fixed enclosed stands over planted fields -selective shooting -agree - not for me
fair chase is preferred by many, - me included been there done that
open tree stands in wooded area - fine - agree been there done that
in open western area, spot, scout track stalk is the norm -agree been there done that

in heavy woods opinions differ, plant food plots, fixed inclosed shooting house over them, tree stands, stalk, pick mushrooms etc.

Thanks for your input

Bob

They started useing the phrase harvesting on the hunting shows to be politically correct. I was raised on a farm and you harvest grains not animals. Animals are killed and buthered. Nothing pretty about it. It is the real world though. ED K

my feelings exactly used to like some of the hunting shows till they got to plastic not the real world regards shooter63

Lots of great opinions. I have hunted in most every fashion. I prefer walk and stalk or drives for whitetails, but those days are becoming harder with age and having suffered a significant leg injury. I still remember vividly the first rabbit I was able to "roll" wih my 410. I simply enjoy being in the outdoors. Vivid memories though are when a difficult shot is made or hunting friends share in the outdoor experience. The hunt is enhanced greatly when using a dog. I love to watch good dog work and often the kill is insignificant. Dogs are illegal here for deer hunting, but someday I would like to do it before the TV shows cause it to be illegal in all states. I too, am huge "Nuge" fan. He tells it like it is. Bottom line is whatever way you choose to hunt, works for me. Take a kid hunting!

Timeout,
Best four words I have read in this whole thread,......Spot on!!
Wayne.

For me a hunt needs to be out in the wild and challenging. Sitting on my ass while growing fat on donuts and coffee doesnt challenge me.

How we hunt obviously varies a lot, but I do not advise sitting in a deer blind in Texas with a rifle and no license planning to convince a game warden that you are not hunting.
