Is H4895 becoming the new 6BR accuracy powder?

More and more I am seeing H4895 taking the place of R15 and Varget for heavy bullet loads.

Any comments?

Funny you should ask about the H4895 as I just returned from the range testing some in my 6BRX with 105 Berger Hybrids loaded .005 off the lands. I shot three groups of five averaging 1. 2795 (30.0grns) 2. 2829 (30.2) and 3. 2846 (30.4) SD & ES were as follows: 1. SD 23.0 ES 63.0 2. SD 14.0 ES 37.0 3. SD 11.2 ES 29.0.
All three groups were under a 1/2 MOA at 200 yds so I will be doing some more testing with this powder.

I tried it with 70 grain bullets and it worked pretty darn good with those too. Only N133 and N135 work better and it was very close to the N133 results.

H4895 is the powder for my 6BR and my Dasher. I have been shooting some insanely small groups with H4895 in both. Tried Varget in my 6BR and it was not what I was looking for. I don't use RL-15 as its too dirty and inconsistant for me.

When I was working up loads for my current 6br, my best groups/loads were with R-15 and 4895 was noticeably behind in accuracy. From my perspective, it may take a chunk of the Varget lovers over time, but with the lot to lot consistency and diversity R15 currently demonstrates and has demonstrated over the last 5 or so years, I don't see 4895 hurting it's foot hold. Keep in mind, each rifle, and reloader will play its own tune..... you have to feed the rifle what it likes in order to reach its potential... and if that is "whatever" powder... let it eat. WD

It is my favourite powder in my Dashers. I am only after velocities around the 2950 fps area and this powder doesn't foul as much as Varget at these speeds. It meters well through a measure, so not much trickling is needed. It is not temperature sensitive, so I can use the same load whether it is summer or winter (with maybe a .1gn tweak at the most if I feel like it)
I wonder if the increasing use of the faster powders might be partly due to the increased use of shorter bearing surfaced Jumped Hybrids over the previously more popular jammed VLDs?

I'm wondering if the 4895 is a better choice for the shorter barrels also.

What is your 6BR load?

Bradley, see my thread here about H4895 in my new 6BR. http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php?topic=3791156.0

RDavies, what load are you using and what is your barrel length?? THanks!
Raptor, one barrel is 28" long and likes 32gns with a 103gn bullet jumping.
My newest barrel is 30" long and likes 31.4gns with 103gn bullet jumping. Zero pressure signs, I think I could get the next higher node with this fast barrel. Both are around 2950 fps.

I'm having great results with 8208 XBR with the Berger 87 Hunting VLD.

Speaking of XBR-8208, I wouldn't think anyone would be using that with the 103-105 bullets.

If I may inquire...what about Varget didnt you like...and how was the H4895 superior.??? Im in the beginning of testing my own 6BR and can use any help available

28,5g of 8208 will push a 107 to around 2800fps quite accurately. I have not worked up a load - just some initial testing. Planning to use H4895 next season, but you always need a back up ( and save the Varget for the 308/185's)

N140 shows lots of promise with 103s so far for me. Work up to this- but at 29.6 of n140 sitting .010 off I'm averaging 2880fps, 5 shots shooting into single hole at 100yds. 29 even gave me 2825 with one hole accuracy as well. Might try varget but with it shooting like this no need to look elsewhere.
