IMR4895 vs. H4895 in 6mm BRA, Decent Substitute?

H4895 seems to be a go-to powder for 6 BRA with 105's. As far as I can tell, IMR4895 is pretty close in burn rate, but of course it's not identical to H4895. Is it a decent substitute for the hard-to-find H4895? Varget is often listed as a good powder for the 6mm BRA, would that outshine IMR4895? Yes, the target is the judge and jury, so I'll be testing. In the meantime, I'm just looking for experience from the group.

As you might have guessed, I have lots of IMR4895 and Varget, but less than a pound of H4895. Plus, it's anybody's guess as to the reappearance of H4895.

The IMR is going to be more temp sensitive and larger sticks. But if you are willing to deal with that then it should work fine.

May require you to tune your load more often

I did not try IMR 4895 in my 6 BRA, but Bart says it is too slow. It was post #195 in the long 6BRA load data thread.

IMR 8208XBR works great.

I‘m running 30.1gr and getting 2910fps with Berger 105 hybrids. ES 11 and SD 5.4

Like you, I am running short on H4895 albeit for a different caliber, the 223 Rem.

I have substituted both IMR 4895 and Varget for H4895 with some minor load development and / or accuracy verification and found them to be entirely adequate.

Don't overlook VV135 it's a good substitute for H4895 or VV140 it's close to varget but will pressure out a little sooner!

Thanks for the insight, everybody. I'll be testing with several of the powders you've listed here. Meanwhile I have a shootingbot alert set for H4895. A guy can't have too many powders, eh?

One of most favorite loads, actually used to set Williamsport 1000 yard world score record, is RL-15. Load was 31.12 grains with a 103 VT. This is a low node of 2910 fps but very accurate.

Entered a recent 600 yard F-class competition. Used a 6BRA rifle (gunsmith was Jim Borden) with ar-comp and 105gr Bart's Hammer bullets. I scored 198-13x. Winds were blowing up to 20mph .. In any case, ar-comp does work well and its a shame that it isn't recommended more often for the 6br/6bra

When I tested it in a dasher several years ago, it was very very close to H4895 in velocity and accuracy.

Comparing AR-Comp with H4895
