Is anyone shooting a 6.5x47L with an 8.5 twist?

I have a 6.5 8.5" twist Border that has about 250-300 rounds down it. I am considering knocking an inch off the front and back and trying 6.5x47L on my AI before I decide what to do with a new 8 twist Kreiger.

Has anyone here used an 8.5 twist with heavier bullets? What's your results been?

142 SMKs and 140 A-Maxs worked well in a number of 260 Rems with 1:8.5 twist. Regards JCS

I have a 26" with an 8.5" twist. I shoot 140 Berger VLD Hunting bullets and they shoot really good out to 1000 yards. MV is 2860 fps.

Shoot an 8.5 twist Brux in the 6.5x47 Lapua with 120-130 grain bullets with very good results. Also shoot a 8.5 twist Krieger in the 6.5/06 Ackley and have no problem with 140 grain bullets. Hope this helps.

I have a few used 8.5 twist 6.5x284 barrels I can't bring myself to toss. One was a relatively low count as it wasn't shooting the way I liked so I put it in storage. I have three active 6.5x284s in match rotation now.

I am running these at 2940-2989fps and I'm hoping the 47L will get me 90% of what the FMs do with better barrel life and if recoil is light enough I'll migrate my daughter to it off of the 6BR.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Chris

I have an 8 and an 8.5 twist 6.5mm barrel in a different calibre, only slightly faster. I found I could get the 140 VLDs to work great in the 8.5 twist in warm weather or higher altitiudes with less dense air. In mid winter though with the more dense air, the gun never grouped as well, no matter what I did with the load. I used 130 VLDs through winter and it kept on shooting great as the shorter 130gn pills were more stable.
I now have a new 8" twist barrel for the heavies, but will stick to 130s in the slower twist. These 130s seem to be a perfect match for the 6.5x47 sized case.
