Is 8 1/2 twist enough

http://www.bergerbullets.com/litz/TwistRuleAlt.php

That bullet with a 8.5 twist is in the "marginal" category. It might give you trouble.

eta - Warm temperatures and altitude would help the situation. Cold temps and sea level will not.

I would have thought that an 1-8.5" twist would be too slow for 140s and up in 6.5 mm but a friend is getting outstanding results with 142 SMK in a 1-8.5" twist 6.5 x 47L (6.5L). I have shot through 6-8 6.5mm barrels with a 1-8" twist, and would look hard at the 1-8.5" for 130 g bullets. I would still use 1-8" twists if the gun was going to shoot 140s and up, because you are on the hairy edge. I might choose 1-8.5" for 140's and up if I was going to push them hard, over 3,000, fps as they would have a better chance of stabilization.

Long story short: If you have a 1-8.5" twist on your 6.5L see if it will shoot the 140's, I think the case capacity is small for 140's but others have shown me wrong. I have not had good results with the heavier bullets in 3 6.5L barrels. There are great options in 6.5 mm bullets under 140 grains so if it does not shoot the 140's shoot lighter bullet's.

I spoke to Walt Berger about this and after consulting his technicians he said 8.5 twist would be OK with the 140VLD's and 130 VLD's but not the hybrids as they are longer. Take the safer option and get a straight 1:8 if you want to try the hybrids. Im sure glad I found a straight 1:8 now.
