Is 30 BR losing favor???

When UBR first got started, most competitors came from IBS score shooting. Most started with a 30 but as time has gone by, the majority have moved to 6s and several 22s. There are still several 30s and its still competitive but the mix of calibers is much more diverse in UBR nowadays.
Nothing really dominates. 22s, 6s and 30s all win their share

In the best edge scoring format all shooting at the same size target, the 30BR, or some other short 30, is still king and probably will continue.

In the UBR format, where the target negates any particular caliber, more and more shooters are shooting the smaller calibers.

While accuracy is probably the same, the much lighter recoil and component cost makes shooting a 6PPC or a 22 variant a much better choice. Shooting a 13.5 pound 6mm or 22 is akin to shooting an air rifle.

I have always said that if the NBRSA ever adopted a neutral score target, I would shoot a 22 PPC 100 short.

I do not look for the NBRSA or IBS to go that route any time soon.

Not for me one bit. Have two. Strictly 100 yard shooter. The only cartridge that surpassed my 222 REM .Pretty much alll the time.
To each his own but nothing has shot more consistent small groups. All the time. 21 inch barrel and 27 inch barrel. It doesn’t matter.

The 30 br ibs competition shooters are not a talkative crowd. Rarely does a six outperform a 30 at 100, 200 and 300 yards. It's an x count game.
And i find that the 30 is blown much farther than a 6. So several will shoot a 6 at 300 just trying to get all 10's.
In ubr it's just not sensible to shoot a rifle that beats on you.

I am going to be shooting my 6PPC at 200 more often this year in VFS. But the 30 rules at 100.

I would be interested to see what delightful cartridges and bullets would arrive on the scene if they allowed up to 50 caliber in ibs/nbrsa score. Do you think guys would tolerate the torque and recoil of a 50 caliber bullet to gain the scoring advantage?

I don't think anyone can argue that the 30 BR has literally eternal barrel life. I got tired of replacing 6mm barrels every 1500 rounds. Mine has over 4K rounds and still shoots under .200". I recently went to 7BR brass and it shoots better than the Lapua 6BR expanded stuff. In my opinion the 6mm UBR target gives an advantage with it's larger X dot unless it's a windy day! Jimmy Mac went from 30 to 6mm what say you? Was it recoil? Jim shot a score world record with a 6.

Definitely not a recoil situation. That was never a bother. I most recently shot a UBR match last October with the 30BR so I still mess around with it. I just find the 6PPC to be more forgiving in the wind than any 30BR barrel and bullet combo I ever shot, especially at 200 yards. Keep in mind. This is UBR where there is no advantage to using a 30BR because the targets negate that. JMO

About 20 years ago the late Eric Klemitich built a HBR rifle around 44 caliber. He used a Panda action.

He used 6BR cases expanded to .429. It headspaced on case mouth like a 45 ACP.

The bullets he chose were Sierra match bullets, which are actually pistol bullets intended for the 44 special/magnum.The barrel was a Shilen.

He put a lot of effort into it. And spent a ton of money. He even tried different twist rates. The only problem was it never shot better than 3/4 groups at 100 yards. He finally gave up on the project.

One thing in favor of the 30br is you must try real hard to have a bad load. It is very forgiving.I have shot matches back to back with a ppc and a 30 . Whatever the 6 needed I would add a ring with the 30. 6 is a bit better, but whether you need to hold 2 inches, 3 inches, or 9 inches....you need to know. UBR does take the big bullet advantage away. I enjoyed the .30br but starting to downsize its the first rifle I sold. Couple of weeks ago the new driver won a match with it, in cold windy weather at 200yds.

That’s quite interesting. I wouldn’t try headspacing on the case mouth for real accuracy and I wouldn’t try a pistol bullet either. Neither seem conducive to BR accuracy. I was thinking something a bit more like a 50 WSM and some kind of custom bullet, maybe in the 350gn range that looks like a scaled up version of the 100-ish grain 30 cal bullets used now.

Agree for the most part, but we both know it is not quite as simple as just adding a ring and calling it good. IMO, the closer one can hold to the intended POI, the better your chances of not getting burned on a quick unexpected letup. Been there. Done that.
