Is 180 grains the best the 7mm can do?

Guys, Kirby Allen's the guy that's got this figured out. he doesn't have a website, but you can find plenty of information on longrangehunting

Interesting ideas for hunting. I can't imagine shooting 20 rounds plus unlimited sighters with a 7mm/338 Lapua Magnum but I can see where it would be an excellent long range hunting cartridge. Do you know anything about the 200 gr. ULD RBBT(.900 bc) bullets he is using in load data for the 7mm Allen Magnum??

I am thinking of trying the 240 gr sierra MKs they have a BC of .711 when fired @ 2150 fps. I should get 2650/2700 fps out of my 300 win mag with a 28” barrel using 76/77 grs of Hodgdon retumbo.

Tony the 200 Wildcat was in Litz's 2nd edition; it tested exactly the same as Bob's 189 gr. - G1 bc of .703 avg for 3,000 fps and below.

Thanks, Jeff. I have the book and will check it out.

Sorry for the late reply but wild cat bullets may have (if still around) a 200 gr .90 bc projectile. Cauterucio bullets has a 189gr w/ a .80 bc. they should do if you can find them. [Foot note.] 1in8 twist rate should be used.

To go any longer will mean 8" twist and faster barrels will be needed. This will cause extra rifle torquing, fouling and bullet blow ups.
Some people shooting the bigger cartridges are already getting bullet blow ups as it is with 8-8.5 twist barrels.

RDavies is correct. There are heavier bullets but they don’t perform nearly as well as the 180s. Remember, high BC doesn’t equate to high consistency.

All the 1,000 yard record setters who shoot 7mm, use the 180s. They just haven’t been able to get the 190s to shoot as well.

Thought about this for a brief moment and was wondering why I have not seen any factory produced 7mm bullets weighing more than 180 grains. Is there less of a return going beyond that point for the 7mm's BC?

We have 90 grain .224 caliber bullets and no .223 is seating that to mag length. Can't someone come up with a heavier bullet for those who load single or use a short magnum on a long action?
Barnes use to make a 195 grain bullet years ago.
