No guns or bullets here, just kind of an FYI.
I ordered some power cables from one of my vendors located in Indiana and noticed that they charged me sales tax which they had never done before. I called them this morning to ask why and was told about the "new law" stating that they had to charge sales tax on everything they sell now. I asked how are you going to keep track of the collected tax monies and see that they are sent to the proper authorities. She said "that's a good question". I asked her to transfer me to someone in accounting which she did. I spoke with their company comptroller and asked her why they started collecting sales tax from me as they had not in the past. She was very helpful and explained to me the recent SCOTUS ruling regarding collection of sales taxes in regard to internet sales. I told her that I have been doing sales over the internet for many years and I do collect TX sales tax on anything I sell in TX but that I have not received anything from the Feds or the State telling me I had to collect sales tax on every sale I make. She then went on to say that the collection of sales taxes by internet based businesses is only required if your business does over $100,000.00 a year in sales or if you have more than 200 customers (sales) in any one state. So, my bad for not taking the time to read the courts ruling as I should have as a business owner. I am now enlightened on the matter and thinking "small business" is good.
Bottom line here is that if you don't want to pay sales tax when buying something from an out of state business, do a little research and if possible buy from a small business. Sometimes the little guys really do have something better going on.
