Internet sales tax

No guns or bullets here, just kind of an FYI.
I ordered some power cables from one of my vendors located in Indiana and noticed that they charged me sales tax which they had never done before. I called them this morning to ask why and was told about the "new law" stating that they had to charge sales tax on everything they sell now. I asked how are you going to keep track of the collected tax monies and see that they are sent to the proper authorities. She said "that's a good question". I asked her to transfer me to someone in accounting which she did. I spoke with their company comptroller and asked her why they started collecting sales tax from me as they had not in the past. She was very helpful and explained to me the recent SCOTUS ruling regarding collection of sales taxes in regard to internet sales. I told her that I have been doing sales over the internet for many years and I do collect TX sales tax on anything I sell in TX but that I have not received anything from the Feds or the State telling me I had to collect sales tax on every sale I make. She then went on to say that the collection of sales taxes by internet based businesses is only required if your business does over $100,000.00 a year in sales or if you have more than 200 customers (sales) in any one state. So, my bad for not taking the time to read the courts ruling as I should have as a business owner. I am now enlightened on the matter and thinking "small business" is good.
Bottom line here is that if you don't want to pay sales tax when buying something from an out of state business, do a little research and if possible buy from a small business. Sometimes the little guys really do have something better going on.

What is sad is the court originally ruled it not ok to collect tax but I guess cash is king.

I also second going to very small companies.

I believe in real life you were supposed to keep track of what you bought out of state and pay taxes to your state yourself. Now they are doing you a favor and collecting for you.

Yes, my accountant always asks for the totals of my internet purchases. Luckily for me I rarely make internet purchases!!

I am pretty sure I never bought anything that wasn't taxed two or three times before some guy who stole my identity bought it, again.

There is no such thing as a free ride, states are going to get tax money from you one way or the other. Delaware,s tax of 8.7% flat corporate income tax rate leads to tax collections that are the fourth highest in the country, and combined with a personal income tax, they help allow Delaware to charge no sales tax. To quote Benjamin Franklin, "In this world nothing can be certain except death and taxes."

Like when i lived in texas in the 90’s- no state income tax, but the school tax was $4000+yr on my house, tag renewal and inspection on the truck almost $100 and it seemed like $65 to renew my drivers license. Sales tax at the registers was over 9% back then. Not so sure that no income tax thing was so good

You’re right, but I am an optimist and look for silver linings!;)

With regards to your paycheck, there's a line at the paymaster and you're the last one in it. :(:D

When it comes to state taxes, I really was amused at Maryland's "rain" tax.

When it comes to state taxes, I really was amused at Maryland's "rain" tax.

Jersey is getting more aggressive. Just going to a “Public beach” is taxed. They call it a fee but what’s the difference. They also started a “rent tax” specifically aimed at folks renting thier beach houses that they already pay the “appropriate” taxes on.
The “rain tax” is pure genius or stupidity, depending on your political affiliation!
Let’s face it. If you work hard, save your money and create any “wealth”, the ones who don’t are coming for it!
Ah, there I go getting pessimistic!

I've lived in Texas all my life except while serving in the military (early 70's) and I don't quite remember it as someone stated. It's true, cities and counties will nickle and dime you to death but we, as voters, have the ability to correct that on a more local level. As another stated "when does the government EVER turn down the opportunity to tax"? Never, and when they start a "new" tax it just gives them the opportunity to raise more and more money for their Compulsive Spending Habit. Years ago, San Antonio saw fit to charge a "storm water fee" based on your amount of impervious acreage. It was .38 cents a year. Now, 25 years later, it's 42.00 a year! New tax, new foot in the door, new hog at the trough. As bad as it is, we are not able to talk those people from the west coast who migrate to Texas were their best comment is "why don't we do it like we did in ......west coast state......... It's because it suffocates the very fiber and life of a states people and economy.
Told my wife I wouldn't get involved in this thread so please don't spill the beans. She already thinks I'm a sandwich short of a picnic.;)

On another message board a poster lived in a state XX with 9% ST. He went to state YY where ST was 6% and bought a snowblower and paid the 6%. Upon return to his state XX, they demanded that he pay them the 3% difference.
