Interesting; correct pronunciations, gun talk

Caliber, originally the bore diameter in hundredths of an inch. And for its bullets, too, even if they are thousandths bigger. Some used the case or chamber diameter for early black powder rounds.

45 caliber, 30 caliber.

The naming of the 38 Special cartridge using 35 caliber bullets is interesting. Then there's the 44 Magnum that uses 42 caliber bullets.

Metric designations used both bore and groove or bullet diameters

Hey it would be more entertaining if y'all chose to explain the correct way to pronounce the ones you're coming up with......
Unless.....you don't know you'd be correct...
Hummmm......

Leupold = Loy-pold

At least according to Dr. Manfred Leupold, a German I worked for years ago. I worked for a German company and every 2-4 years, we got a new German boss.

As a side note, he said his father didn't return home from the Russian Front until 1953. Seems the Russians understood slave labor.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around "ogive". I've been pronouncing it oh-give all my life.

Of course, I've been listening to folks try to pronounce my last name "Scholer" all my life -- usually wrong. Germans put a weird twist on a lot of words. jd

It's ok, I pronounced 'tenon' as "tee-non" for a loooong time.

And for many years I said 'Kahles' as "kay-elz" (actually "Kay-less" according to a documentary of their factory I watched on the outdoor channel)

I sent in a Kahles to Sona repair in Rhode Island many years ago and the young lady I was talking to pronounced it - Carl Call us - .... boy was I confused. I thought I dialed the wrong number.
