Interarms Whitworth help

phoneapril18072.jpg

what do i have here besides an African dangerous game rifle?
in other words, i need bases for it and maybe a new stock and trigger? the price was right for this but it needs help. remington front base looks like it will fit but the rear holes are too close. Is it a HOWA? Charles Daily? i know it isn't the COOL Whitworth's but a cheap knock-off but i want to dress it up and cant find what bases/trigger/stock that will fit it?
it is a 375 H&H Mag and a 308 is beside it.
whitworth is written in the circle at the front base, and interarms is the importer, I may want to change the recoil pad too? I do know it is a mauser action and supposed to be very reliable.

There are some 375 bullets in the low 200gr range that can be tuned to very nice vertical in the 375. You could use it anywhere that a heavy 30 cal would be appropriate. I worked up loads for a friends 375 with Speer 235 HotCor bullets that made a nice deer cartridge.

thanks for a reply
i'm more concerned on getting weaver style bases ASAP and a stock for it right now :D

i don't suppose it would fit a rem 700 footprint and slip right into a HS Precision L/A stock i have?

i have been googleing it for 2 days now with no luck

Maybe this is more what you are looking for.

Seems to imply that your gun is some sort of commerical Yugo Mauser. I have a Mark X in 270 that has the Yugoslavian markings as described in the attached post. I'm not sure about bases but you should be able to find help on "Mauser Central" forum. That's where I got most of the answers about mine. Good luck and let us know what you find out. I think that the 375 H&H is one of the great cartridges of all time.

i did come across that post, that is one that makes me want to get this ready to shoot! no iron sights on this but the mauser action is solid and the barrel is thick and rather heavy and blueing is really nice. i have rings and a 4X redfield and on vacation next week! i need bases really bad! :)

Mausers are great! That's a fine action and barrel. I didn't know they ever came in plastic stocks. Amazing. Perhaps someone installed it? Normally they show up in rather decent wood stocks. The Whitworth was a good quality Mauser.

There are some variations in the "Mauser" family, so it might be best to call first and describe your rifle. I've only fit my own Mauser, and used a Leupold STD base for it.

SWFA has quite an assortment of Weaver bases for Mausers: http://swfa.com/Mauser-C1992.aspx

I'd bet that taking your rifle to any decent gunsmith or rifle shop would get you the appropriate bases. Same thing with stocks. A call to Boyds would likely result in the proper version of Mauser stock being enroute shortly.

My .375 H&H is a Ruger Number One. I've got some good loads for it, although I've only had it a couple of years and have only taken one bear with it. The .375 is a wonderful cartridge. Easy to load, surprisingly easy to shoot, and very effective on game. I took my bear with one shot at a tad over 300 yards. No problem. Let me know if you need some handload advice, I'm better at that than recommending a specific base for your rifle.

Regards, Guy

Wouldn't a masuer set of bases work on it and same for the stock if you mod it a bit if its a mauser action? Just wondering

Weaver no. 45 and 46.
thank you , thank you! i'm on it today.

i have a company vehicle and not allowed to transport firearms while working or i would take it to a shop :(

m700, i found links to others just like this with the same stock, in believe it it is the factory stock and after i shoot the 3 boxes of factory ammo that came with it, i'll be in touch for load data. I remember your ruger and that bear hunt to Maine.

i'm thinking a wood stock or a Bell and Carlson would be much better than this stock. Does anybody out there have a spare stock?

i had another great thought this am, i have a 3x9x40 nikon buckmasters on a 22Mag that is too large for it! i am going to scarf it and put it on the 375 and install the 4x Redfield wideview on the 22Mag :)

This is a blatant violation of your 2nd Amendment Rights, f... your company deep in its... er... fondamentals, put the gun in a sealed, plain and unmarked container with a "yamaha" sticker on it and see your gunsmith. Your Whitworth is a Zastava M-70 rifle, it's a clone of Mauser with an overall quality superior to Santa Barbara's and almost as good as FN from Belgium.
It was manufactured in that same Zastava plant in Kragujevac, Serbia that we bombed in order to let albanian muslims steal Kosovo, the historical sacred ground of Serbia, of course this would never happen today but I digress. The only thing wrong with this action is that it was slightly weakened in the bottom in order to accomodate the very long .375 H&H Mag, so a little handloading is in order. There's nothing wrong with the original trigger that looks like a crude Timney and most bases intended for MkX, Santa Barbara and FN's should fit, provided they are 2-piece sets ( I wouldn't bet my fondamentals on the right option for a 1 piece base)
Congratulations, you got yourself a fine rifle.

A couple of thoughts- first, the 375 H&H has plenty of recoil. That scope off your 22 mag may not have sufficient eye relief to be any fun. Second, for the same reason and for just purely aesthetics, I would not use the cheesy Weaver Aluminum bases on that rifle. Get steel bases. The bases for an FN Mauser should fit fine. You can probably get Leupold QRW bases, Weaver steel bases or Warne Maxima bases should you want "Weaver style".

It just doesn't make sense to get a fine rifle like a Whitworth and put aluminum bases on it!

it isn't a 22 scope,it is a cenerfire 3x9x40 Nikon Buckmasters(the $200 one). A friend has a 4.5x14x40 Buckmasters on his 375 for several years and he said it is fine. Paralax is an issue with it on the 22Mag because the scope is set at 150yds and close up shooting on the 22Mag has been rough especially on paper;) i believe it has 4" eye relief?

Leupold QRW bases,Weaver steel bases or Warne Maxima bases should you want "Weaver style".
never thought of that? back to the store for steel! makes sense to me,more good advice, thank you!
i was thinking of Burris XTR rings? or should i stick with leupold or warne steel? i do have a 1" lapping bar

Burris bases are fine. My Buckmaster doesn't have anywhere near 4" of eye relief. The best recoil reducer I ever found for my 340 WBY was a Leupold Vari-X III scope with a FULL 4" of eye relief. If it has only 3 1/2", eventually it will get you.

I also wouldn't expect a Buckmaster to hold up to that kind of recoil for too long but maybe I'm wrong. I know I ruined two scopes on my 340 WBY. I had to wear special shooting glasses as the scope would pop then everytime. The glasses were thick polycarbonate and had a foam pad across the brow. They are all scarred up now. Thank goodness I switched scopes!
