installing recoil pad

I've installed a couple pads over the years, but the last pad didn't seem to grind right it actully took very little pieces of the pad out when grinding- my question is what kind of grinder is the most used for this ?? bench belt, hand held belt or something totally different???

I use a belt or disc sander. I have a jig from Brownells that will hold the pad at the correct angle. All you have to do is set it up to match your stock and then etch the pattern on the recoil pad. Then use the sander to take off the required amount. I have a 80 grit belt on right now and this makes it a little rough but will do the job. I think I will use a much finer grit next time to get a more polished look.

Hope this helps.

If you go to the MidwayUSA.com website and click on the GunTech TV link, you can download a video that shows a pad being fitted from start to finish. The dialog is kind of hokey, but the video is definitely worth watching.

It is a REALLY big file,45 megabytes) so a DSL or Cable connection is recommended.
