installing a ptg bolt face. firing pin to short..???

I finally received my ptg bolt face for my savage model 12. upon trying to install it I realized the firing pin is way to short to strike the primer through the new bolt face. I understand there us a little adjustment but I'm talking almost a quarter inch. is there an aftermarket firing pin I need or is there some machining that has been missed on my bolt face? I have sent ptg an email I'm just waiting for a response. thanks.

Savage has a couple lengths of Lugs . It is best ask Kathleen if she can match your existing length bolt head , just give here the lug length for reference . We are going to put part numbers for each length on the new web site . Thanks Dave

Chevytruck 83, your first response to your question was from the man that owns the company. RandyB.

I bet Dave from the above post will help you out if you give him a call. In their defense if people are changing bolt faces and barreling rifles they should know what they need.

10-4!

Ditto, what Utah338 said. Give Dave a call. I'm sure he'll do his best to speed up the new part. He's gone out of his way to help me in the past, others too. I could be misinterpreting what Dave said but it sounds like he's got your part on hand now. Stuff happens ;)

I have had the same issue with Savage parts esp switching from mag to 308 bolt head. I was able to adjust firing pin to work. Also I talked to Mr. Kiff today and he is the Real Deal as far as I can tell. Mayday1648

well we gotta start somewhere. savage makes it easy for just about anyone to change calibers on their rifles. I'm sure 90% of the people buying from ptg are smiths who know exactly what the want and need. some of us read as much as we can and take on the challenge. not blaming ptg. but I do feel that there will be more and more people buying parts for savages that wont realize this till afterwards. I appreciate the help guys. sorry if it seems like I vented earlier.

Last night I checked 22 bolt heads and the spread of lug widths varied . Here is the spread ,. Lapua or large heads Min @ .5437 and Max at .5624 ... Long action mag .4938 Min and .507 Max ... Short Min .4371 and Max .4465 . This is a collection of heads coming in from all sorts of places . Some from Savage a couple from Nathanial and others. The length difference very's but like one of the savage Engineers told me , He said Dave that's adjustable . Well THE BIG PROBLEM is some folks swear up and down they have multiple rifles and some short actions have longer or shorter lug widths and matching firing pins and sure enough when they send them in to get a new head and fluted bolt body they have a mag head in a short action . I don't know if a Custom Shop did a conversion or its a old model revision from the Savage shop. Here is what I am doing I have started grinding the heads in three lengths per Savage and Nathanial to a very tight tolerance like always . Our types will be . A Large ( Lapua ) .550 then Long action ( Mag ) .500 and Short action .442 .... That way if a fellow has a different head he can check it and order the correct head by part number on our web site . We will also be bringing out fast lock time firing pins and soon complete Competition bolts . Hope this helps . The deliveries have been long because we did not make a lot of the other two head types not knowing what was popular and now we know we need to make the same amount of all three heads in the various bolt faces needed . Now If I need to add something or change something now is the time to tell me before I get head long into this. 541-826-5808 or dave@kifftool.com . Let me know thanks Dave .

Ooops, sorry.
For the record, I gave an opinion on a Savage, not a Remington. Let's not get our panties in a knot now... ;)
Now, back to the regularly scheduled program.

I guess the reason i was surprised is that while waiting for your bolt face i Ordered a factory savage 308 bf to hold me over from midway or sinclair. it swapped right in without any need to even adjust the pin. I guess i got lucky from what your saying. No harm no foul. Im pretty excited about the accuracy of the rifle as it is so ill probably just hold onto it or sell it to a friend. As for the remington 700 being the solution guys.. How much do you suppose it would cost to buy a remington and have it built into a 6mmbr? How long would it take to get the barrel and parts? O yea. $2500 is what it took to get a 6ppc in a remington 700. Sure it shoots amazing but now in 1000 rounds i have to have a smith do the work to it again as apposed to just having mcgowen send me a barrel in a week. =p

Get a Remington...problem fixed...

Doesn't look related to the OP's original post to me.

And I don't have a pantie fetish as you appear to have. ;)
Didn't know I had one. I'll have to talk to my wife about that one...
Tough crowd...

Edit:
I've been thinking about this one...
I made a comment about a Remington and I am accused of talking about a Savage. I say "let's not get our panties in a knot" and I am accused of having a pantie fetish.
There is some discontinuity in your reasoning. What else shall I be accused of even though you have never met me?? Wow...try decaf.

Are you just switching the barrel on the Savage and the bolt face? If that's the case, the same can be done for any brand bolt gun with a switch barrel set up. All it would take is a barrel and bolt (if a bolt is needed). You lost me on the $2500 price tag. What am I missing?
