Input from F-Class Shooters

To all F-Class Shooters: We're in the process of doing some serious R & D for new products specifically for F-Class Shooters. Our focus, in the past, was on Benchrest, but we've had many calls lately from F-Class shooters requesting different Rear Bag body heights, Ear heights/spread and more. Our new Grab Bag,offered by Sinclair International) has become popular with F-Class Shooters because of its easy-to-grab handle. And we're now ready to begin working on other bags and products to suit the F-Class Shooter's specific needs. Email,sales@edgebag.com) us with any and all ideas, suggestions and general comments, and we'll get back to you. Thanks, in advance, for any input you might offer. Jack Snyder

Something to go under the front rest that is legal and stabilize the rest would be really nice.

Maybe a large flat bag with a tough upper surface to prevent the adjustment screws from penetrating?

Thanks for the suggestion. As mentioned, we're taking all ideas and suggestions and discussing them with our production team to see what we can make work. Keep those ideas coming!

We're working on a bag for the Farley Compact! We've tried in the past, but found that the materials we use for our other bags is just too bulky, so we've ordered a Farley Compact and will begin working on a bag for it just as soon as it arrives. We'll post on our website,www.edgebag.com) and here,if allowed - we'll check into that) as soon as it is out of production and in stock.

I also want to mention that my sister, Barbara Boulanger, works directly with me on correspondence and postings. So there will be times when she will post a response or answer an email, but it is with my approval. We run everything by one another.

Thank you.

I find that the Farley Compact results in very high rifle position that require a very high rear bag which I cannot find on the market so I use a piece of wood or two under the rear bag. It would be nice to have a very tall and stable rear bag.

How much higher than what we now offer are you needing? We presently do a 3 1/4",Standard) and 4",Tall). We've had a couple of F-Class Shooters request a shorter-than-standard bag; like as short as 2". So I think what we're looking for is a range of heights that might be needed, from very shortest to taller than what we now offer. Is Ear Height an issue for anyone? We do a Short,1 1/2") and a Medium,2"). Ear Spread at this time is available in 3/16", 3/8" and 3/4",great for Shehane).

I currently use a Sinclair BR front rest & windage top, with F-class feet) and a Edgewood Mini Gator, tall) rear bag. I am very satisfied with this setup. I would strongly suggest getting the windage top on any front rest if using a heavy Edgewood bag. At 16lbs it’s hard to nudge them left and right during the initial setup.
At the F-Class Nationals this year it was fun to see the variety of equipment used. The surprising thing was the disparity between the quality of the front rests and the rear bags. I mean to have a $800-$1000 in a front rest and $29.95 in the rear bag seems out of wack. To me the tracking in the rear bag is just as important as the front. So this is my plug for Edgewood rear bags. The Mini Gator with heavy sand works great.
Now my area of concern with the whole setup is the available shooting mats. Most have some kind of padding for shooter comfort. If it weren’t for morning Dew, Aunts, and Ticks I probably wouldn’t use one at all. The Mini Gator was a big help in this, but setting it on a 1/8” foam padding seems to still move around a bit. I have seen some cut a large hole in their mat to help this but I’m not sure this is the final answer.
So if you guys can make Saddles you can make shooting mats. They should fold up in thirds not roll up. They should have a stiff, not padded) section ware rear bag is setting that is equal to about 1/3 of the total mat area. The rear bag area should have a suede type finish for grip on the bag. I have a red rear bag so matching colors would be nice.

I would be happy to field test this for you in the 2009 season just me know if you need my shipping address. ;)

Jack, to answer your question concerning added height of a support under the rear bag - I find I need about 1 3/4" of elevation under my Protektor rear bag when shooting F-Class. I too have used a 2x6 board but am not at all happy with the stability I get with it. Problem with a larger support is taht it interfers with your body and shoulder.

Not sure what to recommend that would cure this other than loosing body weight,ie stomach) to get lower to the ground. Wife has this problem, but no due to stomach size, but rather b..... size.

Several people at my range use a home made gizmoe that uses multiple 1/4" to 1/2" stacking shims to obtain the desired height for their rear bag. They are housed inside a wooden box with a solid outer edge, and can go as low in height as 1/4",the thickness of the box bottom) or up to 1.5",all shims inside the box). The box is sized so that your rear bag fits nicely on top, and has a nonskid bottom - as do each of teh individual shims.

Make a nice one of those, you'll sell a bunch of them. I'm happy to give you a rough drawing of what I'm talking about. :)

Hi Jack,

It is good to see you posting here. I had talked with Barbara several times about the Farley compact bags, and was excited when she told me your plans a few weeks ago. With the 20+ lb rifles we shoot, the one coming with the rest is not very adequate. Heck the short range BR guys complain, and they are shooting a 13lb HV, imagine with ours.

Anyway, I am using a Sinclair base with the Farley compact, and one of your standard rear bags. What is working great, and I think the guys should know are readily available are the extra risers, or shims, or whatever you call them, that you offer. The bag is still ROCK solid when placed on them, and they are the some of the best $$ I have spent on my setup.

What I have found is that with the significantly varying berms that we shoot off of, you need options. I have two of the risers, and they have been enough so far to make things work well off every berm. Sometimes I need none, sometimes one, sometimes both, but having the options allows me to set up the front rest at the height I want, and this consistency helps.

The picture below is of the setup with both rear risers under the bag, but this is just off the bench, and not with my f-class rifle. I do hope I can get that front bag in all black ;)

Keep up the great work!!

We are in the process of upgrading our website, so we don't have a picture of the Spacers,Shims/Risers) posted there.

They are, however, priced at the bottom of the Catalog Page. I'm not sure we're supposed to give prices here, so if you wouldn't mind going back to the website, catalog page), you'll see them there at the bottom of the page with all of the other prices.

I need a rear bag with a thumbwheel adjustment on the side, That draws the sides of the bag together so I dont have to reach down an squeeze elevation into it between shots :)

A friend of mine is Danny Biggs, he uses a Sinclair Bi-pod, He always has a couple of blocks of wood under is rear bag. The F-Class bi-pod that Sinclair makes may need an taller bag in the back. I have not noticed this problem so much with F-Class shooters that are using a standard benchrest rest out front. But I have noticed this with the F/TR shooters. YMMV

Thanks for the great ideas and keep 'em coming! We won't respond to every post, but be certain that we are reading them and appreciate every one. If anyone wants a personal response, please email us at: sales@edgebag.com .

The line where I shoot most of my F-Class matchs is not level and I also end up with piles of boards depending which target I draw. I would like to have a set of stiff leather pads that would either nest or be keyed in some way to raise my rear bag. A forum member offers these for other types of bags but not Edgewood.

I am a "F" Class shooter and have trouble with the rear bag that I am currently using moving laterally from recoil which means that I have to adjust the bag after each shot. To help this problem I built a thin wooden box with very sharp edges on the bottom. The box was a big help in rear bag movement when shooting off the grass and off of a mat. My suggestion for your design effort would be making sharp edges on the bottom of your bags.

How about a front & rear bag option that offers a teflon surface, this would eliminate the need to attach that "ugly" teflon tape directly to our high dollar, beautiful stock finishes.
