Information Requested

This coming October Im attending a sniper class for work. I decided to purchase my own Remington Tactical Long Rang (.308) topped with a 20X Leupold. I've added a detachable magazine bottom metal from Wyatt's Outdoor, and ordered a new bot from Pacific Tool with a tactical knob.

I have akso decided to load my own 308's using the required 168 Sierra Mach Kings. Using the suggestions from this site I have worked up a good load that produces consistent "Kill shots" on paper at 500 yards.

Besides a re-barrel job what else can I do, if anything to improve accuracy?

One more thing: This is a Great site, thank you for letting me join in!

What is the accuracy now at 200 or 300 yards?
What is the trigger like?
Is the first shot out of the barrel from day to day in the same spot?
We need a little more information!

Jewell Trigger. makes a big diff. over the x pro...look on Hart's site..they offer an acurizing package for the 700..see how this rifle shoots dirty..if it shoots good..which it probably will..then you dodn't have to worry about clean bore shots

My rifle is zeroed at 200 yards, with a 5 shot string measuring just under 1 inch. At 300 yards it spreads to 2 inches. The cold bore shot is just the same as the 50th shot in 90 plus degree heat in Florida. The first shot stays the same day after day so far with 500 rounds through the barrel.

The trigger is the Remington X Pro set at 1LB.

Thanks for the info, I will go for the trigger upgrade. And so far it makes no difference if the barrel is clean or dirty.

Have you glass bedded? Last time I looked at a factory PSS it was not. Even those with bedding blocks should be skimmed. Also check to see how many threads the front actions screw are actually threaded into the action. The aformentioned PSS had only 1.5 threads holding the front of the action.

No the stock is not bedded. The barrel is free floating (I can slide a dollar bill between the barrel and stock). Should the action and barrel be glass bedded? How do I check to see how many threads are holding the front action. I'm assumming you are talking about the number of threads the barrel is threaded into the action. If there are only 1.5 threads what would be the fix? And, how many threads should be into the action?

He was not speaking about the barrel threads, but the threads that are on the screw that holds the action to the stock..
You DO NOT want that screw to be bottoming out in the action..

It sounds like a nice shooting rifle to me. A 1lb trigger is good, if it is crisp and predictable.

If I were you, I would spend more time behind the rifle pulling the trigger. That should help provide consistent accuracy for your class.

Good luck! ! !
