Information regarding the Competition Gun

Hi,

I am Denzil from INDIA......I am a Rifle shooter and playing at National Level.....I am new to this forum........

Since I am a Big Bore as well as Small Bore Shooter........... I want to know which Gun as well as which cal. is suitable for 300m as well as 1000m target shooting competition............

Regards,

Welcome to you! There are several disciplines that would require different cartridges to be "at the top" of your game.. I know you said "Target Shooting" but there are a few disciplines that shoot at targets such as:

1.) Benchrest;
2.) F-Class (Either "Open" or "F-T/R")
3.) Tactical (Steel Plate Shooting)
to name a few.. Each is BEST served with certain cartridges at differing distances.. I am quite sure there are cartridges that will "cross-over" and do "well" from one discipline to another>>>But if you were to tell us WHICH discipline you are more inclined to shoot, the shooters here could better tell you what would be "Tops" in that respective discipline!

Welcome
If you are shooting 300m are you shooting 3 position if so the 6BR would be a good place to start. When you say big bore do you mean fullbore from the prone position shooting a 308 with bullets 156gr or lighter?

I was not aware that rifle shooting was even an option in India, so that's good to know that it is. If you're playing at National Level, I would love to know which caliber(s) you use now. Perhaps it might be suitable for your needs, or at least it would be a starting point.

Hi,

Sorry for replying late...... first I must tell you all that I shoot 300 m prone and it is free rifle event.......also I am using bleiker rifle in .308 cal. OTM scenar with 155 grs.....I don't shot 3p also now I came to know that they are planning for 1000 m competition........so could I know which cal. and make rifle will be suitable for 300m as well as 1000m.....

Denzil - It is good to know that civilians are able to shoot center fire rifles in matches in India. I think your biggest challenge is going to be components if you decide to go with some cartridges that are not normally available in India.

If you are simply shooting prone, the F-T/R type shooting with a .308 is a great option. Again, availability of some components like specific heavy bullets, reamers, powder etc. might be a challenge in India. The .308 is very capable of 1000m shooting.

See attached article about Derek Rodgers and his .308

Hi,

It is true that we can't get all that stuff which are available in your country......due to that only I am asking because I can import, that is why I am asking which gun (make) will be good for competition both at 300 m as well as 1000 m........although I got the reply of cal. what about the RPA Elite Target Rifle is it good for competition....

Regards,

There are not too many off the shelf rifles that perform well in competition, but these 2 would do most anything.

I started with the Savage target actions with custom barrels 4 years ago and have since upped my arsenal to Bat and Kelbly. The Savages were very competitive at the local club level.

The Savage .308 FTR would be my pick for an all around rifle with great availability to the almost universal .308 NATO cartridge. If interested mostly in the bench sport at 300 to 1000 meters, I think the 6mm Norma is the best choice. Both rifles are in the $1400 range. The negative for the 6mm Norma would be harder to purchase loaded ammunition and it's related higher cost. You would most likely have to load your own rounds, but that is were the fun really starts. Good luck in your search.

I doubt he is going to switch from a Bleiker to a Savage. :-X There appears to be quite a bit of information lost in translation here. Particularly the discipline. His current rifle would likely work great out to 1000 meters and if it is Palma, he is already set.

Personally, I think there is some leg pulling going on...... .......... .......... ........

Some things are very formal in India, so depending on the rules is which way he'll need to bend.

A Bleiker/Dasher might be interesting?
