Info on Cooper Rifles......

Where and by whom is the Cooper action made...???....I know the owners of Cooper used to work for Kimber...I understand it is a three lug bolt design...any info and impressions of the Cooper action/rifle are appreciated...thanks

I have the MV M22 Left hand in .243AI. I also have an 1in8 twist. I love this gun. It is sweet and very accurate.

I have a Cooper rifle with a wood stock also. Too nice to take
out and mess up. I called Cooper. They said send the barrelled action in. I had a chance to be up there, so I took it to them. For $ 325.00 they put on a Phoenix stock, bedded it, shot it, and sent me me target.
They were a pleasure to deal with.
I got to go thru the plant, and see the way they make things.
Great experience.

just purchased a cooper model 22 in 6br its the varminter with a 1-8 twist that was a custom order for a guy here in the uk.he gave back word on the gun so i jumped in and snapped it up.you have to wait 7-8 months in the uk for a cooper so 2 weeks aint bad.
scope will be mounted saturday, nightforce br thats been on my foxing gun cant wait to shoot the cooper.

garyw - I just bought exactly the same Cooper M22 Varminter: 6mmBR with 1-8" twist. Brand new. The Claro walnut is OK, but nothing to write home about. I quickly learned mine has a tight neck: Micrometer shows it to be .270" on a fired neck. I had to turn necks down to .267 for a safe loaded round. Does yours have a tight neck? I only have 20 shots thru the bbl so far, accuracy undetermined. But . . . . the trigger is not good, has some creep. In the owner's manual, Cooper says they will give trigger adjustment advice only to a gunsmith. I gotta call them.

The trigger will adjust. It is similar to a Rem 700. You just have to fiddle with it some to get it right. It is not a great trigger. Mine are ok, some better than others. I just read where somebody is offering an adjustable light weight
trigger. I think it is Jard.

tenring.
agree on the wood, but aint complaining.as for the trigger i tweaked it last night it does have a little creep but a smith i know will hone it for me if thats sucks then ill get a replacement.as for the neck i dont know havent fired it yet im still waiting for the dies. is there any way to determine the neck size without firing, say a chamber cast?.
as i said im a happy bunny because i fell on my feet with this gun,i will judge it when its fired, next week i hope.

gary - Usually, a chamber cast is not needed. Take one piece of Lapua brass, fire a medium load in it, and measure the neck area with micrometer. If it is .268 or less, you should be OK. More than that, I suggest you buy neck turning equipment.

thanks tenring.
if my loaded necks are .270 and you say.268 is fine when fired is the neck smaller due to "springback"?
as you can tell im a 6br newbie!
thanks garyw

They should be OK, but that's cuttin it close. Springback is slight, impossible to measure. If it were mine, It would make me feel better to skim turn the necks about .0005 each side, thus reducing loaded diameter by .001.

another cooper question.
took the action out of the stock to see what was hiding in there, well to adjust the trigger, and saw the bedded area forward of the recoil lug[?] does any one remove this as its in contact with the bbl or is designed this way.will i be better bedding the action or leaving well alone.i know it needs firing first to see what it will do.

I have 3 Coopers, because I can't afford 4. All are outstanding and service is great. They rebarreled a M21 action for me in 222Rem and it is almost a quarter inch gun. The action is like a piece of jewelry. Customer service is great. If Cooper makes it, I seriously consider them unless it is a specialty such as BR or LR tactical. Now, with the model 52 a custom class hunting rifle is within reach.

I have a Cooper Phoenix Model 22 in .220 Swift that is a 1/4" 100 yard shooter with factory ammo. Super gun, also, a .204 Ruger-they all shoot well. Over the years, the Coopers have become less polished/finished looking IMHO- I have some older ones, too. But the new ones shoot, and a great company- I took the tour of the "factory" very informative & a company to be supported. Triggers easily adjusted for pullweight.
The model 52 is going to be a real classic...
