Indoor Fire Forming Chamber

I would like some input on what materials to use for an indoor firing chamber to fire form brass without bullets. I have a pretty good idea on what would work well, but would like to know what some of you folks have used to build one?

Need the sound to be greatly reduced as well. Was thinking about using an air compressor pop off valve muffler on the relief port and coating the inside of the chamber with a spray on rubber coating, then spray can expanding insulation. Thoughts?

I suppose some sort of baffle system in the chamber would be best for noise reduction, but not sure if I can pull that off... maybe.

That's funny ;D

I was thinking about covering a stack of 4 tires in my garage with a heavy blanket then shooting the rifle into the middle of them, but I didn't want to risk it. Might have got the cops called on me too. But hopefully Dennis would be there and just tell everyone I am a dumb*** ;D

I'll talk to Leo...

That is living in town for you, i just shoot out the basement door…… I didn't know they sold meat in the store till i was in high school…… LOL…. jim

Tell me more about the muffler, I shoot in my garage to fire form too. I guess it can't be too hard to make something. Does anyone have pictures?

Wishers salvage yard is only about 2 miles from the house and I have some rubber grommets from high amperage electrical plugs that would fit right in the pipe of a muffler to protect the barrel finish. I'll rig up something for the other end to muffle the sound even further. Should be a wham bam and done project. Sounds like a winner.

Maybe even get fancy with it and have the brother in law weld a nice stand on the bottom..... And lockng caster wheels! ;)

I think he just reinforced the back end, and put a grommet on to stick the barrel in. I prefer cases made with bullets personally, but if you weight the charges, and the cow you might get decent brass.

Yeah, can't get a perfectly sharp shoulder, but it gets pretty close. Have to fire a bullet to get the perfect shape.

Just about any of the hard board insulation materials are great sound absorbers, especially the pink or yellow stuff can be cut, glued and shaped into a sound chamber....the thicker it is layered the better of course.

i do this routinely and have many hundreds of cow(cream of wheat) fireformed rounds including 6.5-284 using a large bale of fire resistant attic insulation. i poke a small hole in one end, take a broom handle and push to center of bale and make a small cavity. insert barrel tip to this point and fire away. the VERY muffeled sound can't be heard in an adjacent room. after awhile you may have to duct tape the seams of the bale...mine in currently totally covered with tape. i once used a large box full of newspaper but became concered about fire...the insulation won't light with direct fire.

I've used a plastic trash can with a small hole in the top; filled can with a roll of insulation. Stick barrel in hole - pull trigger. Simple. Portable and keeps everything contained.

My problem is that the cases are not formed to a full 1.550. You need a consistent blow length for accuracy ……… jim
