In Praise of the 6BR

I have spent the past couple of years experimenting with various "Improvements" to the 6BR, from 6Dasher to 6x47 Lapua.

From my experience, it's hard to beat the basic 6BR. Without going into a lot of boring detail (see my post under 6.5's), the bigger cases either involved a lot of trouble or a lot more powder with very little gain in marginal performance.

So now I'm back to my basic 6BR and appreciating it more ever shooting session. I have found it possible to come very close to 6Dasher performance by using RL-17.

If the wind picks up beyond 600yds I pull out the 6.5x47Lapua.

The 6 BR is great cartridge and very accurate. But when conditions are bad or going to 1000 the Dasher kicks it's @$$. Matt

But in a kind, respectful way.:) Seriously, thank you both for the comments on a subject I have been struggling with lately. I currently have a Remmy 700 re barreled to a 6br. It shot well but I thought a custom would do better so I got a Bat MB in 6br, recently. 3 months ago, I ordered an action that was "supposed" to be my first custom 6br, but I figured I'd make it a Dasher instead, because I got the Bat. Now, I don't have much chance to shoot more than 600 yards so will I really use the Dasher? Maybe the 6.5x47 should be the next build. My head spins.

I have been thinking I should build an improved. I cant justify rechambering two new br barrels that shoot great, and buying new custom dies. Why would I also have a 6.5x47L and 6.5x284 to pull out for wind. Now on the other hand we are still going to be screwed if we were competing aginst the dasher with our br and we both miss read the wind. They will have less drift

you might try the BRX and you can use your BR tooling and from what I hear the only downside to the BRX compared to the Dasher is the 30* shoulder requires the necks to be trimmed more often,,

I think the 600 yard sub .400 WR group was shot with the BRX,,

What is your load and velocity with RL-17 ?
33.5gr Rl-17 over CCI450 under naked Berger 105HVLD. 2950fps in 30" factory bbl.
Usual disclaimer, "This load my not be safe in your gun." Recommend starting at 32.0gr and work up.

There is another factor I forgot to mention. Long necked cases have historically shown better inherent accuracy. Examples: 222Rem, 6PPC, 6Br and 6mmSwis Match. No scientific explanation that I am aware of, but it's hard to argue with success.

The 6 Dasher holds a lot of club and World records in 600 and 1000 yard shooting. Both aggregate and single target. I know of none with a 6BR. Look it up I am talking IBS, NBRSA and Williamsport. It has been the dominate cartridge for the last 5 or 6 years and keeps breaking it's own records. These are the cold hard facts. It just keeps on winning. Matt

I just googled it Rodney Wagner shot a Dasher into .349.
Rodney actually shot a .336 after it was verified by IBS, the .349 was what we measured during the match at Piedmont Gun Club, also was shot with a Brux barrel a Bat action and a Dasher with 108 Berger's if I'm not mistaken;)

The new two gun score and hg 600 score records were shot in 2015 with a 6br.
Personally I like the 6BR myself, Chad Jenkins a member on this forum shot an agg. record with a straight 6BR a few years ago, can't remember if it was light or heavy guno_O

Go with The 6 BR, no fire forming cases, load and shoot. You can add a barrel to your action at any time.

Matt,
The 6BR IMP's hold a lot of records. They do give you a edge for 1000yds. Check your facts. The 6mmBR has set more records in 600 yds bencherst than any round. Sam Hall and Terry Brady has set 10 to 15 records between them, with a 6BR. New Aggs. were set with a 6BR last year.

I Believe Sam set a bunch or records with a Dasher. I know he had a good one or two a couple of years ago. I also thought Terry shot a Dasher or BRX also. I do not know for sure which set what records but I know they win a lot in 600 and have set as many records. In 1000 they don't hardly set any records. I only know of one record in the last 15 years. When the wind blows I will take a Dasher. Matt

Sam most of his records and Nationals wins were with a 6BR. He shot some of his records with a Dasher, and is playing with a 6BR AI now. I think all of Terry's records were with a 6BR.
