The tool bits we use are really simple. I make them from 3/4 inch HSS.
The bars work on the principle of slower RPM, about 30, combined with a high feed rate, about .007 per revolution.

These will not be metallic bushings. The bearings in this application areThordon Rivertough Bearings.
They freeze in.
There are very few metallic bearings used in the Marine Industry any more. That includes rudder bushings, steering linkage bushings, and shaft bearings.Composites such as Thordon, CIP, DuraBlue and others, which are all moisture lubricated, are the industry standard.

Here is the layout.
I work off of a .031 diameter music wire, with 85 pounds of weight broke over a 1 1/4 radius.
The wire is set dead center in the inside seal mounting plate, and adjusted straight with foundation line.

I then lay out those small punch marks so that all of them are established exactly the same distance off of the the wire. When I line up the boring bars, I use a set of half pointed calipers to true the bar up by those punch marks.View attachment 1660406View attachment 1660407View attachment 1660408

In short, I am truing the boring bar by those marks so it is exactly where the wire was.
