I just bought a Lyman bore scope to see if my rifles are really as clean as I think they are.
I don't think I'm doing that bad at it. What I need to know is really what am I looking for? Before you think I'm a total idiot, how obvious will things be? For example, what does a carbon ring really look like? Will copper fouling really look like a copper mine? What I don't want to do is to get anal about this, but just to keep things under control. Are their optical illusions I should not mis-read?
Have never used one before so any information is appreciated. Pictures would be great!
Thanks
Bill

I only get out the bore scope when the grouping tells me something is up. If you use it to much, it will make you anal about every little thing that you see. As for copper fouling and carbon rings, they will be quite noticeable with a bore scope.

RA the video I had never seen before but it is spot on. When looking at extreme copper build up it looks just like the vid, the lands look good the grooves look gold plated. I have seen one that is as bad as the vid. Carbon looks like the edge of the grooves where they should be square sharp and crisp, look like some kid filled the square corner of the groove with black play-dough and it will usually be intermittent. Thanks John Henry for the video!!!

Thanks to all, I'm almost afraid to look! All but 1 of my rifles are Savage factory. They shoot pretty well just want to keep them that way.

Don't be afraid to look use it as a tool to learn a better way of cleaning if you see problems. Any thing you see that is not up to snuff machineing wise in the barrel can't be fixed except with a new barrel so just ignore it till you are ready to replace.

Bottom line is "How Does It Shoot"...???.....in dealing with barrels I`ve saw some that should`nt shoot... shoot...... and some even custom barrels that would`nt shoot......
if you get a ruff barrel..... usually coppering will make it shoot better....

Im not an expert, my 6mm br has dropped off just a bit. After looking with bore scope this morning I have convinced my self that wipeout alone is not enough. Will get my nylon brushes an hopes with kroil out.
Thanks, and may your day be warmer!!!

Actually, guys who shoot in competition use their Bore Scopes often and those results GREATLY assist them in knowing when to retire a barrel in addition to a round count. So don't be afraid to check your barrel and that scope will also tell you how good your cleaning solution really works.

P.S> Bill, you might want to give Barnes CR-10 a try. Good stuff that knocks out copper really well in conjunction (followed by) by Butch's Bore Shine.
