In a unanimous decision, the Illinois Supreme Court struck down two different laws imposing taxes on the purchase of firearms and ammunition, ruling that the laws violated the Illinois State Constitution. The taxes ($25 per firearm and $.05 per round of centerfire ammunition) were judged to be an undue burden against a citizen's rights to acquire firearms and ammunition and were found to violate the State Constitution's uniformity clause.
