I'm new to long range loading, is there a difference between these two powders? I have some IMR4831 but can't find any load data for it on 6.5-284 Norma.
Can anyone help???

Thanks for the reply, I had read that some duplicating numbers had the same burn rate and some did not, seems kinda dangerous for the companies to mix them up like that.
Do you know of any load data for IMR4831 that has been used with the 6.5-284 chambering???

I just checked the IMR load data sight.,http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp)
They do not list any loads for the 6.5-284 with IMR 4831.
I would suggest you start with data for the 260 remington or 6.5x55 and work your way up.
OR
Buy Hodgdon powder.

The 5th edition Hornady reloading manual shows a max charge of 44.9 gr of IMR-4831.It seems kind of low as i have used 47 in my 96 Swede with no pressure signs. The data in that manual is very conservative and on that particular cartridge the testing was done on a TC Encore.

The IMR powders are generally, not always, faster than the Hodgdon powders. Never assume the load data can be used interchangeably; always consult the manuals.

John, the Sierra manual Ed. 5 lists both IMR-4831 and H-4831 powders with their 107-, 120-, and 140/142-grain bullets. The 6 loads' average maximum-charge weight is 4.5% lower with IMR- than with H-4831.

It might be worth buying the manual; it contains some interesting data.
