imr4198/h4198

hey guys,
i went out to buy some H4198 for an in process 30BR. unfortunately i got IMR4198 instead. on the burning rate chart on IMR's web site they are side-by-side. as a fire forming load should @31.0g's of IMR 4198 be safe? it's a diamondback action and Krieger barrel with Lapua brass. thanks for your time.

From lot to lot, anything can be. But IMR is normally slower the Hodgdon.
What does 4198 stand for anyway?
Is it suppose to mean something?

IMR 4198 should be OK. It's probably just a tad slower than H4198. Make sure you go by weight and not volume since the kernel sizes are different.

IMR is NOT ALWAYS slower than H. It depends on the powder.

Mike - are you trolling again??

No mikecr, no problem. I know that you post a lot here and on the other forums so I know that you're not a newbie. Plus, you have been known to ask questions at times that are really bait. When you asked what 4198 meant, does it stand for anything, my first reaction was, he knows the answer, why is he asking that. That's all there was to it.

I'm paranoid. I apologize.

BTW, 4198 is simply the number the manufacturer gave to that particular powder. It doesn't mean anything other than that, as far as I know.

Merry Christmas.:D

The IMR4198 is a bit bulkier than the Hodgden H4198. In my tinkering it seemed to be pretty similar in burning rate. I know this burn rate similarity doesn't apply to all like-numbered powders in the IMR/Hodgden line, though. The 4227's are a perfect exmple of this.

For the 30BR using IMR4198.... it's going to be tough to get enough in the case to get the velocity to where the cartridge really works best.

For what it's worth..... -Al
