IMR3031 or H322 for 6br?

I have my first small 6mm and components/dies coming my way next week. Want to use it for coastal deer: 22in bbl. 85gr Sierra's. I see that on the Sierra load data that 3031 is right up there with benchmark. Of course Benchmark is soon the be traded like gold dust but 3031 is not that popular and I have ample supply. Are there any downsides/caveats to using this powder? I also have H322 but prefer to reserve that for my 223. I dont mind stick powder as I dont load volume. Thx

My immediate response would be 322 but look at the Hodgdon site. IMR 3031 just doesn't come to mind in the 6BR but I myself will look. It might be a real ticket! Gary

Howdy !

IMR3031 could prove to be a bit more difficult to measure, as it is a stick powder w/ goodly sized kernels.

3031 also isn ot touted as being " temperature insensitive ", and that may be important to you ?

I like IMR3031 in Marlin M-336 .35 Remington, for shooting 200gr bullets.
But, I have not read of anyone ( that I can recall ) who used it as an accuracy shooting powder .

Thus my query! I’m not in temp sensitive area and can throw n up trickle the sticks.

IMR 3031 is my go to powder for .243, and the 85 gr Sierra GK, my wife has taken 31 deer here in KY with it, and I have taken hundreds of chucks, and 40+ deer with it in .243 and 6.5x55, I think it would be worth a try. As stated above, it seems not to be temp sensitive and is very consistent from lot to lot of powder. I was gifted a full can that was 20+ years old, opened it and loaded a few test loads for my 6.5x55 to see if it was ok, and they hit the same bullet holes as the ones I had loaded with fresh powder. I have found it a very easy powder to work with, and has nearly the same burn rate as RL 15, cross checkk some load data where they are use in the same calibers, it will suprise you.

Thanks. My little local gunshop sold all its powders out many months ago. The only ones left on the shelf are 3031 at $38/lb in your hand no frt. Might as well pick them up as I dont see availability, and esp pricing, getting any better in the future.

I ran 3031 with the 85 gr Sierra Spt with the default #'s in QL. Seema like it would be a real good powder. With a 22" barrel QL velocity is appx 3050 ft/sec and you would max out at appx 29 grs for just over 56K PSI. Of course these #'s ( velocity and pressure ) can go up or down depending on your specific cartridge #'s.

for a medium weight bullet for hunting I would think it would work reasonably well. Maybe not ideal, but considering the purpose, and the availability of ideal powders, I think one could be quite successful loading hunting ammo with this powder in this caliber and medium weight bullets!

I mean were talking filling the freezer, not setting world records!
